If it doesn't say "YUASA", it's not a Yuasa.

Sooooo I sold off a set of saddle bags and raised money for a new battery of the Wing. I called a battery dealer (yeah, that's their core business- just batteries) this morning and asked for a Deka. They didn't have Deka but did have Yuasa maintenance free for $93 and change. Excellent I says, I'll pick it up tonight.

Get there. The box does not say "Yuasa". It says "Motocross Premium". Well, maybe they dropped it in a different box, but my alarms were ringing. Open box, pull out battery. It says the same as the box and nowhere does the word "Yuasa" appear.

Me: :Doh2: "That's not a Yuasa"
Them: "It's made by Yuasa"
Me: "The only identification on it says marketed by some company in Reading PA."
Them: "It's made by Yuasa. See?" [Points to posted on the wall showing a Yuasa battery]
 Me: "There is nothing on there that indicates who made it. The only thing saying it is is you."
Them: "The boss says it's Yuasa".
Me: :sensored: "If you can't bring me a battery that says "Yuasa" on it, we're done. Give me my money back". :whip:
Them: [grumbling, returns money]

I'm a tightwad by necessity and will cut corners on lots of things but two: tires and batteries. It's trusted name brand or nothing. I wouldn't pay $50 for a battery with a name I'd never even seen before. I am especially not paying full retail good quality price for a friggin' Chinese knock-off. This outfit must have stupid customers. I'm not sure if the counter guys believed it really was a Yuasa or knew it and were trying to pull one on me. I'd love to hear the conversation when they tell this story to the boss, and he realizes he has a battery he has already juiced and now will probably go bad while it sits on the shelf.

Called the local cycle shop. They get me a genuine Yuasa maintenance free for $100 in a couple of days. I made it clear what had just happened and wanted assurance that it would really be a Yuasa. "All day!" he says. We shall see.

A quick search and:
https://www.amazon.com/YTX14-BS-Motocro ... go-ffsb-20

Yuasa Battery Inc. manufacturers the MotoCross line of power sport batteries. The two brands have been rolling off the line together in Pennsylvania, Japan and Taiwan since 2000. The Yuasa labeled batteries are placed into service in many OE applications while MotoCross is reserved for the aftermarket. Other than the red or blue colored stickers the only way to tell the batteries apart is by their YUAM or M numbered stock code. They both use the same Japanese Industrial Standard or JIS numbering system (i.e. YTX14-BS).

Motocross, powered by the Yuasa name, is a bona fide leader in the small engine replacement battery market. Their attention to detail and ever improving standards of excellence as it pertains to development and manufacturing continue to elevate their position as a global market leader.

Deka is all i've bought for over 10 year's. :good: Dealer in Akron sell's them, so not far to go, :nea: saw they are sold in the local battery shop next door to the Dentist, even closer.

FYI

I bought my AGM battery at Autozone in May 2011. It is an "Extreme Magna Power ETX18L". Turns out, the battery is actually a DEKA ETX18L. Still starting the bike like new!

Personally I wouldn't want anything but an AGM battery, to be honest I don't remember where I got mine, but it has lasted over four years and has had a lot of use. I'm a firm believer in battery tenders and keeping a battery fully charged, it really does prolong the life of the battery.

As for brands, at one time I thought Sears had a great battery, but that is when Excide was making them, I don't know who is making them now but they are junk. On trucks we always installed NAPA batteries, why, because of the warranty and and if needed could get replaced anywhere in the country.

Yes Deka makes battery's for a lot of people, or so i've heard. :read: They are the largest mfg of battery's in this country, or were a while back. :good: They give you a few buck's for the old one to recycle them into new ones.

I got this email this morning:

Yes we do sell a motocross brand

So they do own the Motocross brand. I still hold to my original position: that does not make it a Yuasa and the seller is being deceptive by offering it as that. There's some reason they don't put their name on them.

Final chapter. The bike shop I called last night called me this morning and said they could get me a real Yuasa today, it would still need to be filled with acid and charged.

Me: "I asked you for a maintenance free AGM."
Parts guy: "Let me double check... Yes, it's a lead acid."
Me: "Thank you anyway." [click] :Awe:

So I called the local Batteries Plus Bulbs franchise.
Me: "Do you have a 24HL-BS AGM type?"
BPB guy: "Yup. Three. What brand do you want? We have Duracell with a two year warrantee...."
Me: "SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!"

At lunch I picked it up. Glory be, it was exactly what counter dude said it was :yahoo: . It was $120 freaking bucks but it's about the best MC battery you can buy. Counter Dude said he's learned from talking to buyers that most are buying AGM now if they plan to keep the bike. If they are just fixing it to sell it, they buy cheaper lead acid. That little tip is worth keeping in mind when shopping for a used bike.

On waking this morning it hit me. Did I just put a $120 battery in a $400 motorcycle :headscratch: ?
Yes. Yes, I did.
Am I little bit insane?
Yes. Yes, I am. :hihihi:

So am I but I think it's a good kind of insane. I've spent over $1000 on a $500 truck but it's still a lot cheaper than buying a new truck and get's me there just the same.

Can't speak about the battery you bought, :nea: Deka makes but one battery in this size, that one fit's any of the four's, as well as the 1500's. Unlike many other's with more plates in some, less in others, a few year's ago a test was run on all major types of battery's, none came close to Deka. Do not think the Odyssey was included, but they're more money to buy i believe. Been year's since i looked at anything else.

That's kinda strange, considering their made in Pa, :headscratch: think they'd be all over the place. :whistling:

The battery warehouse, bike dealers, and Batteries Plus Bulbs didn't have them. I think they are more available at industrial places rather than retail
Deka makes batteries for a lot of companies that re-brand them. The only Deka "name" batteries that I know of are marine batteries.

As mentioned before, the batteries AutoZone sells under the "Extreme Magna Power" brand are actually Deka batteries.
