ive decided to not use the rear fender nor the fairing..so i turned towards hooking up the lighting for it. the first thing i checked was the relay switch i hit the turn signal and didn't hear any clicking no fuse blown so i when out and bought a 550 three terminal switch from were i work {carquest}. i researched how to wire it and found that the x is for power and the l and p are for left and right and that those two are interchangeable. so i figured it would be ok how i hooked it up i turned the bike on and the cluster lights were going in and out with the clicking of the relay and the turn signal switch wasn't even activated. so i shut it of swapped the wires for l and p and turned it back on nothing happened even when i hit the turn switch. then i swapped the wires back to how they were and it did the same thing it did before i tried hitting the switch nothing changed and blew the fuse...couldn't figure it out before the relay burnt out...was it because i didn't have any of the lights hooked up yet? but i moved on to the headlight and ran into a wall. i was looking at the wiring diagram for the head light to find what wires i needed to hook up to the ballast. which was the headlight to my 76 btw. but i was assuming that the harness plug im holding was what the headlight and blinkers ran off of which had no wires for the headlamp that matched the diagram colors. im confused i don't know were to start i need help on how to hook this stuff up.. and the high beam indicator light was working but now it isn't

On the OEM turn signals, the flasher has to be grounded via the same green wire that is used for the front and rear signal lights located behind the headlight. The main ground wire is connected to the coils at the frame.

BTW, all 4 signals must be connected in order for any of them to flash. Hope that helps!

right I wasn't trying to get flashing just getting the relay to work I had a new one and the green wire was hooked in do I have to ground it my self I don't understand why it acted like this

wouldn't it still click even though no lights are hooked up
The flasher relay needs the bulb loads to flash off and on. It won't click without the lights connected.

so the second way I hooked it up when I switched the wires was probably the right way huh? hints the fact it didn't do anything...

and so I need dual filament bulbs for the blinkers?
I can't say for sure on the 1000.
You can tell this if there are 2 solder looking contacts at the inside base of the socket.
2 is dual filament, one is single filament.

You only need 2 terminals on the flasher can that you have X is for battery/ignition/power L is for the load/lights and P in this case should be pilot lamp as in the little light in the dash. The bike doesn't use the P terminal. Some flashers are 3 wires and the extra terminal is earth but it is normally with the symbol E. If you wire P to earth/ground you should blow the fuse and possibly the flasher can :(

The turn signal flasher usually is a 2 wire flasher. As the power runs to the flasher then to the switch the switch then powers the left or right turn signals depending on which side was activated... a 512 would be a suitable replacement for the flasher..

Its a 1100 and I was asking about the bulbs because I bought single filament fixtures for turn signals. And thanks for the run down on the relay I needed that. I hooked the earth to the wrong port.

What color wires go to which letter port just to be sure and I want to use a three port I dont like un used wires

I would use a test light to be sure but green should be earth which is not used with a two wire flasher can. White/green should be ignition fused line which would be X and grey goes to the lights L terminal.

Ok I bought a new flasher and hooked it up right this time. So on the gl1100 will those single filament light fixtures work for blinker or do I need dual

The dual is only so that you have a marker/park light, I was going to disconnect mine and just use the flasher part of the 2 pin bulb but I have grown used to them now.

The 1100 is wired for dual filament bulbs up front, and singles in the rear. The drive/parking/stop/license plate bulbs in the taillight housing use duals. You can certainly wire singles in the front and they'd work fine, but you'd need to replace the sockets.
