loose handlebars

so im looking for a quick temporary fix for my loose handlebars, the clamp that holds it on is just a bit to big, the bolts are as tight as they will get and yet it is still loose.

the guy before me put what looks like thread lock in there, i cleaned it out, and it worked fine for a few weeks now, and all the sudden they start loosening up again.

i just need to think of something to do a temporary fix until i can leave my bike at my buddies for a night and he can grind that bracket down for me.

sounds like he replaced the handlebars (1200's are thicker than the 1100's and I think the 1000's may be even thinner)

I once used 2 stainless steel hose clamps with the screw tightening part cut off, probably a hundred other things that will work.

They are 7/8" bars, not sure what the problem is...but i just need something for now. one thing that i think might work is wrapping some aluminum foil around the bars under the clamp a few times.

NO! try the grinding thing if anything at all. We just don't want to lose you to tin foil. :blush: oh2:

I wonder if all the splines on the bars have been smoothed off allowing it to move under the clamps?

Grinding the clamps seems like the best option.

thanks, its just a temp thing, and it works great so far....the problem i think after looking at it a little closer is the gripping grooves on the bar are more smoothed out then they should be and have some crap in them. Right now, a large ammount of tin foil is settling on those groves, and i tested it with some good force to see if they would move, and they are rock steady. so for now, that seems to be my temporary fix until my buddy can get some time to grind for me.

If you were looking to temporarily pack them I would be using some lynishing tape rather than tin foil that has no body and almost works as a lubricant. Plus I believe as you ride the tin foil will continue to compress and the bars will come loose.

I had a set like this. Does it have an aftermarket bracket? I wondered if mine wasn't the right size. I used lead tape from a golf shop to wrap around the bars. It worked.

You can cut two strips from a beer can to use as shims.
That's an old trick I learned when I used to live with the indians.

You are going to have to elaborate a bit more on that.
All hondas with tubular bars ar 7/8 Maybe the wall is thicker on some,but the outer dia is 7/8.

Is there a differance in the clamping area?The grips are the same.

What part would you like me to elaborate on?
1200's are slightly over an inch (25.55mm)
1100's are slightly under an inch (22.65mm)
Neither is 7/8 " (I think bicycles are)
Grips are not the same although you may be able to squeeze an 1100 grip on a 1200 in a pinch
it all seems pretty straight forward to me ..

btw if you have the right bars on the right triple tree the knurl would not rub down and even if it did the bars would lock in place well enough.

Without looking at your bike my guess is your problem is one of the following
1) - you have bicycle handlebars (or another bikes) on
2) - you have a 1200 triple tree and 1100 bars

There is no reason to get defensive.If there is something you know I dont,I want to learn it.
A quick search confirms that they are the same grip fpr 1100s,1200s,1500s and 1800.The only thing I recall having 1 inch bars are HDs and cruizers.

I will re-ask my original question.Is the bar thicker at the mounting area (near the tree) than at the grip?

It is totally possible to still have the correct bars,and got moved around while not torqued tight enough.
The bars are steel and the clamps are aluminum.Perhaps you can clean up the knurl in the bar and replace the clamps if machining them does not work.

I made risers for mine out of aluminum and they are holding tight for three years now. Maching should work fine.
