New here and have fuel issue (i think)

Hello, I got a 1984 GL1200I about 5 years ago after it had been sitting for years. Did a carb rebuild when I got it and it's ran great until now.

My GL1200I sat for about 2 months recently (fixing other stuff on it). It ran fine for a coulple weeks. Then I got some new plugs, AutoLite, and put some gas cleaner in the tank and it started acting funny.

Sputtered and popped on the way to emissions last week. As I was in line, the bike quit on me. Finally got it started, passed emissions, and got it home, thankfully. Although, after it popped it seemed to run better for a little bit.

Changed the fuel filter, it was a mess. Now the bike is still sputtering and the plugs are covered with black powder. The fuel pump also has a ticking (thumping) sound. It acts like it's starving for fuel, power is low. I just charged the battery, didn't help.

Any thoughts on what to do first? I read a bunch of posts, could be pulse generator, could be fuel pump, could be rust, or it could be carbs.


I'm just not sure where to start. Any direction would be appreciated.

I'd change the fuel filter again. I expect you have a good deal of sediment in the fuel. Welcome aboard by the way.

I'm with slabghost...prolly got some doo-doo in the tank, and using the fuel cleaner loosened it up, and now it is getting in the filter, and possibly all the way to the carbs. You may want to drain all of the fuel you have into a container, and see if it is contaminated....

Silly question, what's the easiest way to drain the fuel?

Try putting a long hose on the discharge end of the pump then into a container and turn the key on. This way you'll know if fuel delivery is part of the problem since you should get pretty steady flow at about 2 lbs. pressure.

I have yet to get anything I own to run on Autolite sparkplugs, to each their own but I would start with those plugs

welcome to classic some good advice on the electric pump thing ...black shooty plugs id a sign of to much fuel ...id suspect the pump would do fine and you might be in for somthing else as cause ...stuck float maybe ...let it run totaly out of gas with petcock tuen off and see what dose when you start it again...could be bad wires failing even tho the plugs are good ..weak spark can make the plugs look rich

:hi: Welcome to the C G W ,from Somerset Ma. I would try to take off the tank shut off valve and clean the gunk out of the valve. I was changing a leaky hose and broke off the hose connection. When I took off the valve I was reaqlly surpriser to see all the crud in the valve. Just be sure to turn over the 4 hole gasket when you put it back together, or it will leek when you turn on the fuel. :moped:
