Problem was the battery was no good and wouldn't spin the starter fast enough to engage the starter clutch, at least that is what I think was the issue. Put a new battery in it and haven't had a starting problem since.

No need to pull the engine to replace the starter. It's a bit close, but it will come out. First, make sure it's bad...try cranking it directly with jumper cables to ground and the cable terminal. You may have a relay (solenoid), starter switch, or other wiring issue causing it to not spin. Try the easy things first.
