Please pardon my selfishness by starting my membership by asking a question. First let me tell my story and then ask my question.

I have a 1980 GL1100 Interstate. Approximately three years ago the starter clutch finally went completely out. the water pump was also starting to fail.

Previously, I had done all my own mechanic work but health issues prevented me from fixing the bike myself. Lucky for me (so I thought), my nieces husband was a power sports mechanic. So he picked up the bike and money for parts and took it to work on it. You can probably see where this is going. They moved out of state leaving my bike in someone else's garage.

He told me he had everything fixed but hadn't finished putting it back together. I have no idea if this is true. I finally gave up hope that he would finish what he started and tracked the bike down and brought it home. The bike is sitting on my trailer still partially disassembled.

I still am not able to do the work myself. I think I have all the parts but I can't find anyone that is willing to tackle putting it back together. Even if I did it would probably cost more than it is worth especially considering that the fresh paint job was ruined while it was lost.

What should I do with it? I live in Texarkana Arkansas. I would sell it for salvage but we don't have a motorcycle salvage yard. I could try to sell it to someone for a project but I have no idea what it is worth or where to advertise it. I am not able to part it out myself but need it gone. I would rather see someone take it as a project than sell it as scrap.

Can anyone give me some advice? Thanks in advance

Marc

Geesh..Thats a sticky situation, they are tough enough to sell running..If it were me I would try the local Craig list , ask around..If they still have bulletin boards in auto parts shops and hardware stores(showing my age here).
You can almost certainly get your money back or at least more then by parting it out and selling it piece by piece on ebay, doesnt require much just a wrench and socket set.
I really hate to see these bikes stripped but that's how we keep the others on the road..I cant think of any other way other then you getting it running yourself or finding a person nearby that can.
Good luck with it.

If you can still ride and want to. Maybe you can buy another motor and pay a kid to follow your instructions. Any of the 1000,1100, or 1200 motors can be fitted. Easiest of the 1200's though is the 84 which retains the ignition at the rear of the motor like 1100's. That would be my first choice. If it must go I'd advertise it for $500 or best offer.

I can still ride. I like your suggestion. Now if I can only find a kid that will work lol

I am using tapatalk to access the forum. So far I haven't been able to edit my profile. I am Located in Texarkana Arkansas. This is on the border between Texas and Arkansas.

Another suggestion is to talk to several local youth ministers in your area. One or more might want to take it as a project to hold young men's interest and teach some skills. Not that I'd let the youth minister touch it! (I've known and loved many - they generally have zero mechanical skills.) They can get an interested mechanic to supervise. Replacing the water pump and remounting the starter are not hard jobs, but require attention to doing it correctly or the engine can be damaged (particularly the belts). If you have the garage space and tools (and want to mentor some young men), even better!

I wished you lived closer, i could fix it for you. I have several people looking for a goldwing that could be restored or redone to fit there needs.
to save it from the scrap heap I would drive it to Springdale for someone who wants to restore it. I would just need a few bucks to cover my travel. Send a PM if interested.

I'm sorry, I didn't close the loop on this thread. Paul (backyardtrouble) is the new owner of the bike.
