Yeah. In just under a month my town (more like a village, pop. 340) puts on PATOOT (Petetson's Annual Trip On Old Tractors) and we basically do a 30 mile tractor ride around the countryside. I'm trying to decide what I'm going to take this year, choices are an IH 656 Hydro or a 1948 Farmall M. Both of those tractors still have their work clothes on. My son (2yrs) is super big into tractors right now so I'm kinda excited to see his reaction when we take him down to look at all the tractors.

i used to have a IH 456 hydro the 50hp version best cultivating tractor i ever had im assuming yours is the 100 hp IH or icant remember the numbers right....that constant pto speed no matter what speed was a huge plus in busch hogging or any other pto work

1948 Farmall M!!!!!
That's the workhorse of the cotton gin around home....at least it was back in the day. Pretty tough stuff. I learned how to drive a standard shift on one of those, when I was prolly 7-8 years old.

Yeah we used the 656 for the square baler and that hydro worked great cause if you got into some heavy stuff you could slow her down just a bit without having to worry about changing gears. I love driving the old M but I think there might be some things that have to get fixed with her before I would take her out on a road trip. I learned how to drive a standard shift on our old 706 gasser. That was our main around the yard tractor. We had a pig basket on the back quicktach and when you put 6 sows in there all you did was wheelies so we got good at steering with the brakes. I kinda miss that tractor (not too much as she was getting pretty unreliable in her old age) and the memories made while polishing the fender with my butt when riding with dad.

gee that the same for me 706 gas tricycle tractor pulling 4 bottom 16" plow was a ride no one could ever forget ...it plowed with the front end in the air most of the time ...and you couldnt back off it would just kill the gaser....planted with it mostly that was more reasonable ...people think motorcycles are thrilling ...tractors can take you out big time at 4 mph easy make you never want on again...706 took some skill for sure

I remember dad telling me that they were plowing with the 706 and at night you could see the exhaust manifold just glowing cherry red. Grandpa always got equipment so big that the tractor "could handle it" but not really well. I know that we would still have that tractor if she would have been a diesel.

Uh....let me see. A gasser is one that runs on gasoline?

(City slicker here though my roots are farming)
Sure is. As opposed to a diesel or one of those rare ones that ran on LP.

ya know .... this is why I like this site better than other Bke sites more like minded people I felt it the first week I was here - its funny how guys that like old bikes always like old iron as well Aperry I hope you are going take lots of pictures on the ride.

Talking about thrilling moments on tractors I will never forget my first summer driving the tractor instead of always up on the ladder - old Ferguson my cousin and I used to rev it up full and pop the clutch to see who can stand it up higher and longer.
One time we were pulling stumps and I did not pay attention to the tip point, tied up too high. The old girl stood up and was about to go over I caught the clutch just in time - almost bought it before my 14th bday.

Being a city kid moved to the country. My first job was wind rowing a hay field. when i saw a wire dangling fron the old JD I got down to pit it back on. learned tral fats to shut the da-- thing off first.  :ahem: :whistling: Never did that again. :music: :music: :music: :hihihi:
