Odd helmet question....

I have to admit I've been leaving the leather jacket at home. I wore it last summer when I was commuting on the freeway to our sister facility. Also, I find if I hydrate just before riding I'm very likely to get thigh cramps.

 It was great! Both of the visors were useless for about a minute, but after that my head was cool until I got about a mile from my apartment(18 miles to home from work). That's when I noticed sweat on my brow. I forgot to close all the vents and I bet if I use the full visor I can extend the benefits. I also had my orange loose long sleeve t-shirt and gloves in my helmet, they warmed up quickly but it was nice while it lasted.

Oh, it was 113F when I left.

The wife and I put our helmets (while still keeping an eye on them) in the ice freezers with the bagged ice while we gas up/use the facilities. May not last long, but it's sure better than donning a hot helmet! As it's getting above 95 I'll start taking mine in with me at work. Makes a noticeable difference over one setting in the trunk all day.
I also start wearing long-sleeved micro-fiber shirts in this weather. Wet one down and it cools for half hour or more. I just wet a micro-fiber rag to dripping and put if around my neck to keep the water flowing. Air flowing through my mesh armor keeps it evaporating, even in humid weather.

I tend to agree that freezing your helmet isn't a good idea. When I was commuting I wore a cool vest on 100 plus days and sometimes in the high 90s. The first time I used it I wetted it and put it in the freezer for about an hour, that was a bad idea, it became way too cold. The cool vest kept me comfortable for my hour ride home and did a good job on some longer weekend rides.

You don't have to drink right before riding, though I do recommend it. Hydration should be going on steadily from the day before. I don't know much about cramps, but I do know that dehydration can make you cramp up.

I have two of these "Personal Misters". We bought them years ago when we were doing the car show thing. I use it on the bike when the temps get up in the high 90's, along with the previously mentioned cool sock thingy around me neck. The mister will keep your head/face nice and kewl with the wind in yer face. It keeps me from almost passing out from the heat, especially in traffic.
I also wet down my do-rag, and put it in the freezer for aboot 5 minutes before leaving in the evening. It will be dry in 10 minutes or so, but that 10 minutes of having a cool head is definitely a big help.

Stay chilly, my friend!
