It has been awhile since I posted so I could not find my previous postings. I have replaced the stator, the rectifier, rhe battery, and the ignition switch. Putting the 86 gl1200 back together and the temp gauge shows max temp as soon as I turn on the ignition. Any ideas what to cheeck before I tear ir down again?

First I'd check the 7 volt regulator. Goldwingdocs.com has details, and I believe he sells them. I'm not sure if a shorted temp sensor wire would cause that issue or not, but that would be another place to look.

Typically the gauge will peg hot if the wire(or sensor itself) is shorted to ground. Not sure on the 1200, but there are 2 temp sensors on the 1100, one for the gauge, and one for the fan. IIRC, one is a single wire, and the other a 2 wire sensor. The single wire would be the one for the temp gauge.
