ok finally got a meter to work with ....and it appears the starter is shorted the positive post on the starter and the housing are showing continuity....so im toast on fixing the starter ....must have who knows how many in indiana that i could replace it with ....but that not an option...sheesh

it didnt make it yesterday to the battery place ...

the battery is showing 12.6 volts at the moment ...

tryin to get in touch with jp winger he has a few used starters i might be able to get parts from

That starter has been almost as much of a pain as the wiring. Maybe a neighbor has a parts bike they want hauled off?

thanks for the posting ....at moment i have just a couple options ...i have a 1000 starter i might be able to use ...but the bolt holes dont line up ...dosnt appear i can use 1200 gear head on it ....but will look close at it today .....the one parts bike is rather close but i dont have that much money to spend ...probably will call....problem is 84 starter is different on 84 bike ...and it dosnt fit the 86 motor in hooch ....

ok pic of the 1000 starter in the 1200 motor ...found a pipe connector that makes a good wedge to hold the starter in ....fits rather well and looks esay to sandwich in ...mat look for same pvc connector as the perament one ....so far things looking good :builder:

replace iron pipe connector with better fitting pvc ...no bolts in starter at all ...

bikes running ...want to think jpwinger for the starter and the talk to form a plan to work on....... hooch is running great it seems ...starter sounds different but seems to work good so far ....

ok that how you put a 1000 starter in 86 1200 motor ...pleased so far :thanks:

seems to be ..i think killing hot wire through wiring harness stop the short we will see right now the new battery seems to be doing fine ...still putting things back together at moment ...seems torunn better down low ...i think the short was causing low voltaged at low rpm ...

New you could do it!!!!! Might beware of vibration and keep it tight. Jerry
o use
yep thanks jerry ....i was quite lucky ...the 1000 starter has like a rounded back ...the gear shift lever protrusion made two like surfaces ....and the round pvc fitting witch is round also made perfect torque pressure in all directions ....so it pretty much has no backup pressure in a strait line ...this really locks it in....also this is all in a place where the motor wont get very hot....i will watch it good ..im also going to put a bolt in it too soon ...have to make a custom washer to use...but so far it hasnt moved one bit ....still very pleased :thanks:

Sounds like Hooch is no longer electrically dead in the water Joe......
Maybe only just a little loose! :smilie_happy: :smilie_happy:
