Searching around on the interweb, it turns out there are at least two examples of Saber Cycle timing belts failing on 1100's. I guess I cannot do that to the future owners and will install Gates belts.

Turns out, Amazon is selling them at $13.53 right now so that is about $11 cheaper (for 2 belts total) than I had planned, so it looks like Gates belts for this bike! :thanks:

Take a look at Rock auto for new gates belts.

$12

New is best, but one of the concerns for older belts even just a few years is sitting in one position the whole time. The part around the crank is flexed pretty steep. If they've been hanging out of the sun on a nail or in a package, they're probably fine.

 Ya know, sometimes it pays off to just be patient, (unlike me trying to get this bike on the road). :cheeky:

Pulled the radiator, timing belt covers and, lo and behold, there are two fairly new Honda timing belts on the bike!

The lettering on the part numbers on the belts has barely even started to change from pure white yet! The bike only has a little over 600 miles since the PO bought it 3 years ago. I guess when he took it to Honda after purchase, they did the timing belts, oil, antifreeze, tires and fork seals. I know he stopped them at the carbs because they wanted $650 in labor alone to clean the carbs.

Oh well, I guess I have a spare set for my '82 now. :hihihi:

Pic of the belt.

That was a nice find. As for me I wouldn't buy a cup of coffee from Saber. Their customer service makes McDonald's look like they sent everyone to a Dale Carnegie course. I am banned for life for asking a question andI am now in therapy for my loss, still going through the stages of grief over it.

Since we are talking about belts this won't be too far off topic. When George and I changed Crystal's belts we used Gates, but the what amazed me was how the idle smoothed out when the new belts were in. One couldn't help but notice the difference. The tensioners were replaced too so that may have made the most difference.

I agree Joe! Proper tension on the belts will give a smooth idle. A slightly loose belt allows one cam to be ahead/behind the other just enough.

Many people don't know, to turn the motor over 360 degrees, to set the other belt's adjuster.

We need to get this inserted somewhere on a belt tutorial! Great post.

Isn't this mentioned in bronko37 and CRAFTMAN6001 "Timing Belt" threads? It's certainly detailed in the FSM. Just saying.

its been mention all along ...there are no tension spots on both sides of motor once belts are on and these are the spots where tension should be set one side and then the other...pesonally i dont even have the spring deals on mine and dont pay much attention to the honda way of doing it ...just go for the deflection i want in the belt and tighten idler ...

I use the springs only for setup and get a starting reference for belt tension.

Adjust left belt then right belt after rotating, then run and warm up good and check tension. Especially on this 1200 engine, I find you can play a tune on the belts after tensioned by the springs so I use tension when hot as a gauge. I set it so the belt is under no tension but no slop either then it's good when cold.
