Hardened bolts and loktite seems like a no brainer, or am I missing something obvious again?

Loctite is great stuff, however if is effected by heat. The way we remove bolts that have been secured with locktite is to apply head, the locktite softens and the bolt or nut is easily removed. What I would like to come up with is a rotor that is easy and inexpensive to replace. I'm also aware of the liability associated with it.

The concern I have with self locking nets is the heat from the rotors effecting the plastic on the nut, same issue with locktite. I was wondering about flairing the end of the bolt once the nut is secured.

There are self-locking nuts made by slightly deforming the threads rather than having a plastic insert. This may be an option. :ahem:

Good point about the loktite and heat, I knew I was missing something.

The self locking nut sounds good, I've used them before.
There are also nuts that have teeth on the one side which lock the nut or the good star lock washers.
I've had to really wrench some of those to get them off.

The “deformed nut” idea is a very good one. You can identify those nubs by the indentation on the side of the nut. I was told those nuts only come in grade 5, but since there is no real load on the nut that should be just fine. That along with a star washer should do the trick, now if I just had a cad machine.

I have been playing with this idea for a long time so it is time to get to work, should have the steel next week. I’m going to order another set of used rotors and then start to work on the ones on my 83. Was talking to our Machinist today and he thinks he could make a one piece rotor with a lot less effort. I think we will try both ways and see what is the less time consuming, the material is cheap the labor isn’t. What I’m looking for is to be able to make some good rotors that we can sell for around 75 bucks each. Considering the only ones I have found out there are around 200 if I remember right that would be a considerable savings.

I got a set of rotors from Ebay for $19.99.

They were listed as 1980, but they are the '82 vented rotors. 4.87 MM so there is still good meat on them, no scoring and not warped! :Egyptian: :Egyptian:

I hope to install them on Saturday. Just got back in from Alabama and I might need a few zzzzzz first! :lazy:

Cleaned up and installed the rotors today. They are perfect!!!!

Smooth brakes.....ahhhhh....what a sensation!! :music:

Now, I have two sets of slightly warped rotors!!!!! Just goes to show, they do not have to be out or round much to make the front end jump! These rotors are smooth as silk! :music3: :yahoo:

Does it brake better?
I'd like to get all mine working better.
It sure does! AND I don't get my teeth chattering anymore!! :smilie_happy: :smilie_happy: :smilie_happy:

I am doing a brake rebuild right now. I have new stainless lines and pads here. I am waiting on caliper rebuild kits (rebuilt the master cylinders a couple years ago). I sent the disks off to the true disk guys on Friday so I should be hearing from them today or tomorrow about whether or not they think they are thick enough to grind. When I get it all back together, I will let you know how it all works. Hoping for a significant improvement.
