What part failure would cause over charging?

First suspect would have to be the regulator....assuming the gauge itself isn't flaky. Do you have a multimeter to check the voltage at the battery? That's where I would start....see if it actually IS overcharging first, then diagnose why.

Back when we had points in regulators they would overcharge when stuck. Come to think of it. I haven't read of overcharging in a long while. It's mostly been not enough charge.

Overcharging can also be caused by a dead cell in a battery, loose or bad connection at the ground or a loose or dirty connection at the RR.

i know you don't have a problem with your alternator but the regulator is built in and it only takes about 40 minutes to change an alternator on a 1500 wing
Good to know! Thanks.

remember i did a write up on the alternator going out on my 1500 wing, it happened about two weeks before the m&g at joes last year. all you would need is an alternator and new rubber cushions to do the job

My wing overcharged recently, turned out to be a bad connection at the regulator/rectifier. The voltage sense wire was not getting good connection. Cleaned the connections and added dielectric grease, and now she's better.
