One thing that I don't like about the look of my '82 is the rear turn signals...they seem to stick out way too far.

Here is a picture that I came across of an '83 and the turn signals seem way closer in and look better to me. Did the owner mod them to get it like that? :headscratch:

Yes, I agree. Would be worth the effort for the better look.

Yep, they have been shortened. My '82 Standard and the '81 Standard we sold last spring were like your first picture.

Here is a mystery that I would love to figure out :headscratch: : The front tire is a Shinko 230, 120/90-18 which is the correct size for an '82. It is almost 5" wide at it's widest point. The GL1000 finder barely clears it by less than 1/8" on each side. In order to get that the front wheel/tire off I have to first remove the fender.

Now I am thinking about putting an OE type GL1100 fender on. I have one that came with the bike but it is too damaged to use but it gives me something to look at. The width between those two braces with the brake hose clips is only 4".

Yet according to the Honda service manual for '80 to '83 GL1100 the wheel just comes out once you remove the left brake caliper and the axle clamps.

The Shinko 230 is about 1/4" wider than the Dunlop 404 that I had on before but to go past a 4" fender width you would have to have a way skinnier tire. Also, doesn't the '83s have an even fatter tire than an '82.

What am I missing here?

Here is another problem I have. The original speedometer was way off to the point of being useless (showed 40mph when I was doing 60). So I took it apart to see if I could fix it...couldn't...so bought these gauges at a swap meet for $5. This speedo is very close when compared to my Garmin. I changed out both gauges because of the gray-green faces.

So now the speedo is accurate but the tach works but is clearly not correct for my bike. I still have the original tach.

So I need a black/white speedo face to replace the gray/which face. Which I had with the original speedo parts but threw that stuff out a couple of years ago. :head bang: NEVER THROW STUFF OUT.

I could try and find another speedo...even one that doesn't work so I could get the face. Also I see on the internet that you can get gauge face decals but don't know if they have them for GL1100s. Any other suggestions

The piece is a cover for the clamp on top of the radiator.

Thanks Wicoy, I never would have looked there. So does it go over the upper hose clamp? Wonder why they put that there.

I've replaced all the OE style hose clamps with the common worm-gear type so don't really need it.

Per Dunlop tire for 82-83 is MR90-18

Just for info 80-81 tire is a 110/90-19. Fits 2.15" wide rim and width is 4.21"

Which shows the MR90 width to be 4.25" to 4.50"

Shinko shows the same dimension range on their site, they recommend 230 or 777 tires for yours.
when you drop into the specs for the 230 recommended tire it highlights the 100/90V-19 tire as fitting.

Yes #8 is a cover, hose band part #19519-431-000

I have a Honda parts catalog for GL1100 80 81 and 82
and another parts catalog for GL1100 83
Both books show every part on the bike with the part #. Both are for Gl1100, Aspencade, and interstate.
I use it a lot to tell if I have the correct order of parts when I am putting something back together.

If any one wants one it costs about $25.00 for Kinko to make one. If interested let me know which book you need.
It has a clear front cover and is wire bound together.

Thanks, that would be very useful for sure. I have been getting by by looking at the parts fiches on vendors like Partzilla.

This is just a theory :read: but that rubber cover (8) and the wiring harness guide (9) seem like after-thoughts to cure problems with the wiring harness rubbing against the top of the radiator and that hose clamp. Maybe even part of a recall.

The front tire I have is a 120/90 - 18, Tourmaster 230. Is there some other numbers on there that I should look at? The Dunlop 404 (in that same size) that it replaced was only slightly narrower.

As far as the triple trees go: I did replace forks on this bike when I bought it (due to collision damage) with a set from Straightwings. But I still have the bent front end and the distance between the fork legs is the same.

My question is, with a space of just 4" between those two braces on an '82 fender, how do you get the front wheel/tire in or out?

I agree, there does seem to be something wrong with the size of my front tire being so wide. I will try contact Shinko and Fortnine (vendor) to see what the width should be for that tire size. :rtfm: :whip:
