Bead lock is on other motorcycle wheels including the 1500 wheel. DID wheels and some KZ wheels have a big shoe inside to lock the tire beads in place. I think dirt bikes use that shoe also.

Thanks for the pics....that's edzachary what I needed to confirm what I thought. :thanks:
As far as the tire coming off while riding, I wouldn't sweat it...they make them now that will go right back on.... :hihihi:

Dan, a car tire is designed for a rim that actually measures 14.968. A Motorcycle tire is designed for a rim that actually measures 15.080. A difference of .112 That's not much until you start to stretch that tire over it, add the bead lock on the inside of the rim like joe removed and it becomes a bear.

:thanks:

Now I can understand the reason for it too.

I wonder if they could get fresh tires pre rolling to replace tires mid race? Might be a bit tough to do on purpose.

ok ive got the long test ride in ...darkside experience was all possitive ...first thing is the 165-80-15 makes the gearing taller ..as tall or taller than 1500 i think...if im going to get any mpg from taller gearing it will here ..its tall geared..it is also very powerful and handles the gearing well ..the suspension is so much better with the front fork mod of more spring added it actually more comfortable ..handles the power much better...the car tire brings heavy duty type feel in handling witch i think is all possitive for me ..i can tell exactly what the bike is doing.....

so hooch is a 1000framed darksider ..and is going to stay this ..it was a completely worth it mod..hooch can run throad with any of the road bikes out there easy ...looking forward hopefully to great milage on rear tire ..this the best this bike has ever felt in handling :thank_you:

Dang! :head bang: I was hoping for a report of some improvement! :smilie_happy: :smilie_happy: :yahoo: I sure hope some of this rubs off on Jyd.

i beleave brian the undercurrent name has to be like that already...in most people thoughts mine too...hooch is a prime example of knocking down limitation of stock bike of 40 yrs ago...and making it as good as anything built today....hooch takes back seat to nothing in overall bike ..it delivers great in all areas ..never felt that way till this frame stiffining and darkside deal was done ....at speed the bike is just waking up off idle now ...you knows what this bike could run all day at in speed ...way over a 100mph i bet ...not that im going to try and find out ...

yes mike a honest super possitive .....

darkside road trip test of 1000 miles plus ...has been done ....to me tme this is a great moment in my oldwing addiction....i always wanted it to a true road touring bike from the first purchase of my 79 oldwing 1000 bike....as i was disappointed some on the interstate with oldwing gearing ....

well this trip was everything i ever wanted in expectations on the interstate.....the hooch bike runs 3900rpm on my tach at 80mph...on top of that it has goobs of power there ...the dft carb is in low capasity running at this speed and when called on takes off big time ....sling shot passes on the interstate at speed was easy at any road speep and reqired no shifing down or worry that the bike didnt have the punch ...it has that and punch if you can stand it yourself ...the bike was very comfortable ...and it needed to be ..i am somewhat hurt ...and the bike really didnt add anything to the pain ....

now for the car tire and its effects ...well ive look at the tire it looks just like it did when i left...seems to be no wear at all....the car tire and its taller gearing effect from being taller than stock tires is what brought the bike into road touring class gearing ...it seems to be taller than 1500 wings ...it also is very much more powerful than 1500 wing ...it is senseless to want more power as clttch is maxed out ...there nothing wrong with my clutch ..its just at its limits of what it can do.....pass me it is the next weakest link in the hooch set up....but im ok with that ...it is actually fine set up ...you just dont want to be trying to over tax it ...i dont anyway ..im wanting to ride this bike for yrs .....truth is in my opinion ...this the best road trip at speed ive ever been on ...hooch made the interstate seem like going through residental streets curising....the spring mod on thefront forks was great deal too ...bike feel was excellent...

now it is now time to say i got over 40miles mpg during the trip ...and that it done this at a higher average speed than any other road trip ive ever done ..that huge to me ....seems ive finally got enough gear in the bike for gearing to have an effect...very pleased

now handling ..sheesh i know this is going to be ?...but flat out my opinion is the car tire is a better MC tire than any MC tire on a oldwing 10 times over ,,gee ..my experience is all about oldwings and tires availible for them im not talking all MC tires I cant i have no experience on them ...but when it comes to oldwings i do ....braking was increased big time ...bike like to stay up ...gives great feel feedback in cornering ...im sold and one of the bestmods ive ever done :thanks:

Believe i would rather modify a 1500 wheel, easier to find, & try not to change too many stock 1200 parts.

well to each there own denver ...there really isnt to much difference ....except the car tire for 15" wheel is three times cheaper than 16" car tire that works great for me

That's enough reason to go 15" right there.

Just a comment that I have about 45k on Michelin Primacy run flat rear on the 1800, and will never go back to MT on it. 2X milage and 1/2 cost compared to a MT. Better ride quality, better control over gravel in turns, better control in wet. Only difference you have to get used to (and this is on the 1800 with a 195/55R16) is that you have to press a bit more to get it to fall into a turn, but after that it feels normal. Also, wallows just a bit more in truck ruts. What a great development to have them on the older wings!

Agree 1200 wheel will match on a 1200, & car tire has been in my thoughts as well for a long time. :good: Only reason for my thoughts as to the rational for 1500 wheel overt he 1200 is number of 15's verses 12's, it's wider, taller, & has the double bearing, to handle abuse better if necessary. :builder: Glad it's working well for you!!! Keep us posted as always like to see others ideas, & results. :salute:

hooch is a very lite bike as compared to a 1200 dresser ...it got the 1500 whell mod for reasons of better wheel....the left over parts were not tossed they were used on hooch ...in essence two bikes got modded ....you have seen the threads denver ...this a choice between two ways ...it was modding parts to the best situation ....and as for hooch being a super road bike bike with tons of torque...its made a bike bike of a caliber honda didnt come close too .....this is a super bike and weight load on the wheel was reduce by 20% id say....if the 1200 wheel ever goes bad denver ...i have the answer to fix it the situation ...but the present deal i think last and last is what im gambling on :builder: :thanks:

Didn't think they were lost or forgotten. :smilie_happy: & any way one chooses to use them is to to them!

Cool ! i always wondered about the Bead on a cartire/motorcycle app,, that tire has a nice round shoulder profile should be close to stock without too much Rear steer, had a Darkside for a few years myself..still looked like new after 10 k miles, but it was too square and slow speed parking lts rear steering just about threw me off couple times lol..so many choices and have seen good results with car tires,,I picked the wrong damn tire...back too a oversized MC tire expensive and already got a flat ..Cheap A$$ pos !! btw Joe i am digging your Shadetree backyard Lathe !! i do $hit like that too lol...reminds me of Burt Monroe and Worlds fastest Indian..my favorite movie

Old Bert had an advanced case of What the hell, not much else to do, & its a lot of fun, syndrom! :smilie_happy:
