I'd go 600 grit wet/ dry paper with ATF to wash away the junk. A small rubber block that flexes will hold the paper more evenly and help prevent too much being removed in one spot. Wipe it out with a rag and look it over. Feel it with your finger tips for any roughness. This is NOT the job to hurry on.
 
hmmmmm ... sand paper is mostly last choice type thing to me ...I do use sticky back paper on a finger to spot work quite a bit ...but not much all around the cylinder sanding ...

Yes sir it does. here is a general up date i have the cyilender cleaned up pretty well . I found a cycle shop a couple of towns over. ordered a gasket kit will pick it up tommorw then reassembly . on the otber head there is a wire or string holding the head on what is this. sure would make it easier to clean off the old gasket with it off the bike .any pointers to reassembly ?thanks bill
