Hey guys... Well last year.. September-ish I came across an 81 wing... I had been trying to find the love of my life.. A 76 1000. But I found this

..the ol girl had been sitting for 15 years. A shade under 40000km on the clock and no reason to not believe as all the markings are there. I got it home and gave it a really good clean then started stripping.

I haven't run the engine but I've turned by hand. I drained the oil to check it... Clear and golden in colour. Good start. Long story short... Stripped right down almost immediate and started work from the frame up.
I found quite a bit of cancer in lower frame tubing so frame went off to a local guy, specialises in Norton frames. He repaired that, not cheap but it's done.

I then found some more in the left hand side of frame. Around where swing bolts in. There was quite a bit of rust under the bracing.

So I cut the bracing out, cleaned out all rust area, fabricated some steel in fills then fabricated the brace.

I've got more to add so will add a bit more when time allows...
 
Great work! Check the cross frame where the centerstand attaches. It is often a soft spot for rust when you see the type of frame rust you are up against.

Nice project. Will be following. Great bikes these when finished. Mcgovern61 did a new wiring harness and fuse block for his "Slug" good read and may be of assistance. Good luck.

While I was waiting for the frame I was able to do a bit of shopping. Bought a set of progressive springs for the rear and seal kit. I fabricating a spring compressing unit.

So now shocks are almost good to go. Just have to fit the seals and rest of the guts to them.
I ordered all brake rebuild kits from brake crafters. Good service from those guys. I had 3 new stainless pistons made
For calipers. My master cylinders have been rebuilt. Perth brake and clutch centre re-sleeved the cylinders with stainless sleeves. Product used is called ezy sleeve. So I was able to retain the original rear master. Wasn't cheap but considering the options and trying to find a good replacement....

I purchased a sandblasting unit, same as the harbour freight ones you guys get over there in America. I've made some mods to it so that it functions how I want it..
I did all my brake calipers etc I've painted all that gear ready to go.
Also did the diff housing. I was contemplating polishing the housing but decided to paint instead. I think it was correct decision too..

I was able to get my frame painted over pasr week. And I'm happy with the finish. I used the KBS coatings gear on it and is really that good. I'll be using again

I rate this KBS coatings very highly after painting my frame with the rust seal package. The pics of my frame are as it was finished. No cutting or polishing. No clear coat. It sprays on beautifully and self levels.
Im told that even when brushed on it comes up extremely well.
I am also told that it is extremely tough... Tougher than powder or plastic coating.
Once I have all my other items sandblasted I'll be doing them with same coating.
My engine will be done in an alloy silver similar to factory, then I'm going to clear coat it with KBS diamond clear.

Wow this product is way different ..seems in a good way ..
I have to admit I was dubious about it when 1st told about. So many products don't live up to the hype. This one does...

A Time Warp Vintage MC club member was telling me about KBC just this evening. He likes to brush it with a foam brush.
Im sure there are several ways to use it. I sprayed mine, with approx 10% thinner, kept the air pressure down at 20-25psi for a gravity feed cup. I think real trick tho is the air pressure to avoid it misting and so that it layers on. Im not 100% happy with mine as there are a few light spots so when I get back home in just over a week, im going to give it a light rub down and another coat.
I watched a video on youtube the other night with a bloke brushing it on. You dont brush like a normal paint tho, its again brushing one way and layering it so that the coating self levels..
Good stuff tho... :cool: :cool:
 
I've been toying around with ideas for colours for the body work of my wing. I really love my Honda candy reds...

There was a lovely example for sale here in Oz a while ago but the red is just a shade light for me.. Would like something a bit deeper..

What are your thoughts?
Im also considering painting the engine a satin black but leaving the heads silver and belt and rocker covers polished... Kind of accentuates things a bit...
 
Bit of an update... While all this covid business has been going on I've been able to devote some time on the wing.
I've finished rebuilding rear shocks.. Progressive springs etc.
New steering head bearings and swing arm bearings fitted.
Wheels have been givin a scrub up but Wi be painted... Something like a metallic charcoal grey with black pinstripping around the edges of com star spokes and black rims... But I reserve the right to change my mind on that...
Picked up a front and rear fender in good condition.. A bloke down south finished doing his wing.. Nice job, I'll post few pics of his. And also a set of stainless steel silencers which aren't really me but figured someone may want them.
Centre of brake rotors will be a satin gold... Forks once I rebuild them if I can find set of progressive springs for them... Forks will be satin black along with the engine..

Time for an update... Just about ready to throw the towel in... This frame is seriously annoying me... Now I find that the swingarm pivot point threads have been cross threaded. So means swing arm will be out and bike won't track correctly either.
I was considering packing it up and taking to the tip... Thanks to a mate convincing me in few emails to keep plugging on.
Then I've put my 1st set of carbs (1&3) in my ultrasonic bath. I used a non corrosive degreaser in the water... Non corrosive my behind... Discoloured those carbs and now I'm worried that I've damaged the internals.. So on the hunt for carbs 1 & 3...I drained water for next side and just used simple green... Came out real nice. I've been unable to find any decent tutorial on what to use in the bath... So I experimented... And whatdya know.. Less is more. Now there is no carb kits avail either...but I really only need the bowl oring, air cut off diaphragm (not essential I know but it's what came with) accelerator pump diaphragm and inlet manifold Orings. Been reading up on fair bit of mike Nixon's stuff...
If anyone has some advice or experience on shipping a frame let me know please

Most people use simple green purple on carbs

Yeah... Nah not avail here in Australia... Just plain ol simple green.
