if i remember right the air box mod i made which was not the k&m was done after using atf and after significount gain in milage and when done there was a significount gain in power ...seem to help better burning of the atf and gas mix ....i think thats the way it went down.....

I have to admit, old girlfriend is getting smoother and quieter by the mile. Today I had a puff of white smoke in the morning and the same when I left work, but they weren't the clouds described in this thread.

~O~

Is this with the Seafoam or atf?
sorry Dan missed this one. It was with atf, same today a puff of white before work, but after work and with direct sunlight the puff was blackish. The ride home was fine. In fact each commute is better than the last...which is damn odd, the bike was running great before this change of gas additives. I'm only 1.5 tanks into this and the results have me thinking this is too good to be true. I mean what the hell....where did the exhaust leak noise go? I don't have this kind of luck. :nea:

I just want to positively narrow down the reason so that I can keep getting this mileage!

Me too!

Adding the ATF does seem like snake oil but with no changes to anything else I saw at least a 2 mpg increase on one tank.
There is a possibility of some error tracking it over just one tank that's why I hope I can get out on Sunday for a long ride.

The atf I got is the cheapest Pep Boys had.

Seriously though, maybe the air flow increase is helping the total mixture burn better. I'll see what this tank does without ATF and then try again to see if it make s a difference.

I bet airflow is helping, definitely don't hurt.
My usual highway mpg is 40-42 with a standard air filter.
The last long ride was the Barstow ride with a K&N I put in for that trip, same 40-42.

Of course that is my issue and the reason I started this thread in the first place! My normal highway mpg is only 35 mpg and it seems that everyone else averages 40-41mpg. And now that I got 41 with an additive I am grateful, but still do not understand why I get 35 average in the first place. :beg: :head bang:

Yesterday I notice mine smoking, only from the left exhaust.
The smell was definately burning atf, it smelled like spilled atf on an exhaust header.

It cleared up after a few minutes but I wonder why smoking only from the left exhaust, an over rich carb maybe?

This got me to thinking, will atf settle to the bottom of the tank and float bowls after a time?

I wondered this also.Does the ATF stay suspended in the fuel,or does it settle(or rise)when parked overnight?
I could probably poor some gas in a mason jar with a couple oz of ATF and see un less someone else has already tried this.

I don't think it settles. Old girlfriend sat for 24 hrs(very rare) and there was no puff of smoke today at 4:30pm when I ran to the store.

RE: the air box, I was told by someone that altering the air box or not using one can cause overheating issues.

well id say that alittle of both things you are mentioning is right .....it probably will settle some ....and it proably leaking carb to some degree ....its like the stuff they put back in the gas to make it work evaporates out thats not a complete mix either .....atf is a great tell all it lets you know whats going on .....i mean it wasnt missing was it .....a good thing to do is look at the plugs and see if you think there not looking right or looking fine ....

id say if your bke been sitting a few days without running do alittle handlebar mixing :smilie_happy:

~O~you can hear anything just like the atf thing from me ....some stuff good some stuff BS....

The ATF is heavier than gasoline, and it will settle overnight, or after an extended period. While your riding, it's gonna stay mixed, since the fuel is sloshing around in the tank.
What I have determined on mine is this: Mine has only blown smoke out twice, on the first start of the morning, and both times, it was almost on Reserve. So, my thinking is, once the fuel level gets down to the reserve level, it's gonna pick up more of the ATF mix than normal, and therefore, the fuel bowls will also have a little more of the ATF in them when you shut it down for the night. I can't say if a leaky float will aggravate this or not, but it certainly seems reasonable enough.
That's my story, and I'm stickin wid it... :cheeky:

i just went through my 2nd tank with ATF, This time i only used 6oz since that was all what was left...
6oz doesnt seem like it was enough, With 8oz i got one to one and a half more mpg, With 6oz i didnt see any mpg improvment vs no atf, just a little low end torque

I just filled my tank up without any atf, Ill wait till i burn at least a gallon till i add some atf, Im thinking of trying 10oz this time

just that most were thinking 8oz was already to much .....i dont think so ....i will dump 8oz in if all i need is three gals....didnt mean to trip you up...

Nah i dont think 8oz is too much... I dont think its too much till it smokes like crazy, Nah you didnt trip me up, What ever that means
