It looks pretty slim in this area right now unless I buy a complete bike... then I'll have lots of spare parts!

Sorry to read about this issue. Backfiring through carbs normally indicates sticky valve or incorrect timing because when the sparkplug fires the intake valve should be closed, making a backfire physically impossible.

Black sooty plugs could be low compression, lack of coil amperage as JoeDrum explained, or if you have been running the engine at low rpm it could even be fuel related.

If you are still trying to sort it, begin with direct coil power to battery (again, as Joe and Dan stated). Since all 4 cylinders have similar compression and they are all black I doubt it's a loose coil lead or plug cap.

I will be watching this to see how the story goes....
 
I feel your pain Brian, I am going to do an engine overhaul on my '76 this winter. My compression readings are super low too, about 90psi per cylinder. I have oil literally coming out of my exhaust, however I am amazed at how well this bike still runs. I can't imagine how hard its gonna pull adding 50+ psi per cylinder. Gonna be a fun winter project.

So many choices. Seems all the 1100 motors on ebay are a long ways off, so I am looking at an 84 Interstate. Guy claims when he was trying to sell it, the buyer crashed it on the test ride. Can't beat the torque from that 1200 motor. It may be time to make a franken-1100.

Only with Honda Goldwings will you find folks taking a dressed bike motor and putting it in a smaller frame bike naked, or taking a smaller naked bike and dressing it up with all the goodies.... :doh:

Once you ride a 1200 Standard and compare that to an 1100, you understand just how much of a difference those 100 CCs really make.

My goal for the 1100 before this problem started was to keep the Vetter fairing but to put on an older WJ III, get rid of the Interstate bags and trunk in favor of a set of Bates bags that I have and run with no trunk unless I was going on a trip which I would then have the Interstate trunk to put on the bike, and then paint everything black with charcoal black highlights... the Bates bags are already on the bike.

Now fast forward to today when the 1100 motor appears to be failing. If I can find a semi-complete 1200, well that could solve a few problems. First a foremost, an engine for the 1100 and then I could have a spare rear wheel to work on going darkside on the 1200...

My wife thinks I am crazy, but there is a method to my madness :BigGrin:
 
More than the 100cc's, :smilie_happy: hydraulic lifters, clutch, bigger tires that improve handling, 4,000 rpm =80, instead of 60mph. The list goes on, & on. :salute:
 
Not just that but with 1100 heads and 1000 cams it can be made a stump puller with a single carb.
So far from the list of parts I think you have, you already have all the ingredients, just add 84 motor.
 
+1 on the '84 motor. It's a straight bolt-in. And if you buy a whole bike you can get the hydraulic clutch, electric fuel pump, and 1200 exhaust etc. All of which add cost if you have to buy them.
