How much ATF per tank of fuel? Also, does a 77 engine work in a 79...especially considering the 79 carb rack would be used on the 77 engine....no, no not on the barn find bike but possibly on another "find".

6-8 oz of ATF in a full tank of fuel. About 6 oz when filling from near reserve. Pretty much all 1000 and 1100 carb racks will interchange on these motors with minor alteration. 1100 rack on a 1000 need the vac port plugged or capped. 1000 racks on 1100 motors should have a vac port added for the vac advance on the 1100. Some just run without the vac advance or switch to C5 which doesn't have vac or mechanical advance. More than a few have changed to single carb intakes and most say they will never go back to stock carbs. It's all in what you want really.

I built a Single Carb Intake for the Trike , and rebuilt a 2 brl. Rochester Carb.... never have put it on, but....I'm Gonna ! :laptop:

You better hurry, cuz I'm waiting....waiting.... :fiddle: Need to keep my hands busy, lol. Post a pic or two.

so, a while back, I notices my rad fan no longer worked. I've changed the rad (old one leaked), replaced the coolant, new rad cap, new thermostat, new hoses but the rad fan just wouldn't work. So, last week I decided to replace the rad fan switch. Nah...that didn't work, although the old switch didn't work properly anyway. I replaced the rad fan itself with a good one and voila...the fan now works as it should....finally!! I'd say the cooling system on my bike has been totally replaced. The only thing left is to rebuild the water pump. It seems to work fine. (touch wood).

First of all....Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all my fellow Wingdingers and your families!!!

I took the 79 out for a ride today and noticed the fork seals are leaking and the dust covers cracked. Time to replace 'em. I can't seem to find a fork seal/dust cover set available for the GL1000. What's the best way to go. OEM?, All Balls? K&L? K&S? A combination of two? Something else I'm missing? I just don't want to install a "known to fail" set that I don't know will fail, lol. Looking forward to some wisdom.

Good Evening fellow Wingdingers. I haven't posted here in a while. Spent a bit of time with the GL fixing and repairing the last items on the old bike. Next 6000kms are going to be spent riding the bike! No repairs...only gas and oil if it needs it! I'm gonna bore you with the last items I've done to the bike. Here goes.....

Front forks received new seals, backup rings (one was missing the other effed up by yours truly) dust seals, fork fluid, progressive springs with 11/16" spacers and new crush washers on the drain bolts.

On to the back end of the bike. It received new wheel bearings, new tire and tube (the old one looked like new but was 12 years old, eeek!!!), replacement rear brake disc. Rebuilt the rear brake caliper (including new pistons) installed new brake pads, new brake line, rebuilt the rear master cylinder, fresh brake fluid, greased up the rear zerk and repainted the drive splines with moly 60. Then topped up the battery with distilled water and recharged it.

Replaced the valve stem seals with some pretty blue viton ones.

Hopefully, that's it for a while. Although a nice electronic ignition might be nice....hmmmm...ride safe, everyone!!!

Great stuff Def :good:
Will be good to get some kays under your belt :moped: :moped:

so... the charging system on the oldwing decided to work intermittently. I unplugged the stator connector (yup this unit still has one) and it looked like crap! So, I cut the plugs and soldered the 3 wires together. Hopefully that will cause the charging system to work properly.

However, when I tried starting the oldwing, it just wouldn't run right. It seemed to be running only on 2 cylinders with a strong smell of gas. I pulled the plugs and 1 and 2 plugs are soaked with gas. What the?? Anyway, any ideas as to what may have gone wrong? The only wires I disconnected were the wires going to the points. Maybe I plugged them in incorrectly?

Any ideas would help....I'm weak when it comes to electrical stuff.

Sounds like one connector in the plug isn't making good contact. Clean the points plug and tighten the female connectors a tad.

Thanks for the replies!!! Yup, I mixed up the points and condensor wires up so badly it took me and a buddy all morning to figure it out!! Bike is up and running. However, I think either my stator or battery are beginning to fail. Voltmeter seems to be reading a little low... I'll post up if it turns out to be anything.

Well guys.... about a week ago I SOLD my oldwing. I learned an absolute ton of stuff working on it and it was alot of fun! She looked great and never let me down anywhere on the road. Sold to a fellow enthusiast that has a nice collection of older bikes. Kinda sad to see it leave the nest. Thanks for all your input... I may be back as I can't help looking for another oldwing on CL! Cheers, Def.
