I've read a lot lately about putting early 371 cams in an 1100, Now don't get me wrong. I've ridden a '76, and man, that thing was fast!!

Much faster than my 1100, even in the condition it's in now, (that being "wonderful")

So I've got an opportunity of getting a '77 set for $60 and I plan on changing out my head gaskets next winter anyway because the old girl smokes that sweet smelling smoke from the motor while warming up, then it stops.

My questions of course are numerous, are the cams the only thing responsible for the 1000's speed? Are the '77's cams the same as the '76's? What am I likely to gain if I do this job? If anything? And do you think I even ought to waste my time?

the 77 cams are the 371 cams, these yrs are 75-77....the early carb rack is nice to go along with it but 1100 rack is not bad either but carbs are a bit smaller ... I think effort is definatly worth it in my opinion ...

My experience the cams are bolt and go even if there is wear on the lobes. As with anything mechanical, no wear is better but I don't see it as being a show stopper.
With the early cams my 1100's sweet spot is 5-7,000 rpm where it smooths out and purrs.
I lost some lower rpm torque when running the stock carbs but now with the single carb that torque is back better than ever.
It's a "I won't go back to stock" type of deal for me now.

I got the '77 cams, now I'm looking a little deeper into it, I wanna put in new valves to get rid of that tapping noise that comes with dished stem ends.

Trouble is, I can't find exhaust valves for sale for it, (inlet valves where easy to come by,) though I have heard from probably an unreliable source that both intake and exhaust are the same valve, do you know, or can you guys find out if this is a fact, as my tech' book went the same way as my last hard drive. Thank you.

The engine I'm working on is an '82.

Going by memory, the valves are all the same size 75-83. The 83 model had an intake valve that was not dished on the combustion side. If you could get them, you would pick up a little, very little, compression boost.

Well here's what I dug up!

The OEM part # for the '82 exhaust valve is 14721-371-000 - no longer available.

The Vesrah equivalent part # is GG-1005-EX - no longer available.

The Vesrah intake valve, GG-1005-IN is however widely available, this, I do not understand, an exhaust valve, due to its closer proximity to heat, would, you'd think be more prone to wear, are all our bikes eventually going to die from exhaust valve failure? :headscratch:

I rather doubt it. Someone will find a valve that will fit.

Sir you are absolutely correct and it only took a little more digging to find it, 14721-371-405, unfortunately they are at a minimum $50 a piece, but they do exist, that means our bikes will survive death by exhaust valve failure. :good:

Well I dunno! I could have got a little too excited there, 'cos this is what I got an hour after ordering them.......

This part has been discontinued by the manufacturer or is no longer available. :swoon:

And they billed me twice for it.

That sucks really badly. Gonna have to see what happens..
