Changing out camshafts, '82's for '77's

Hey Guys! Another question? The shop rebuilding my heads (Griggs Performance Engines of Spring TX, well earned plug) called me to say they have a discrepancy between the 77 and the 82 left camshaft, the 77 has approximately a 20mm x 8mm dowel pin on back of the cam that the 82 does not.

In my inexperience I'm thinking this was a points cam drive that my 82 does not need, but I don't know.

So over to you again guys, what did you do with it? I told them to wait until I find out. Thanks.

These 2 attachments show it pretty clearly.

It is indeed the points cam mount. I would keep it, just in case you should want to install a C-5 Ignition system in the future, you can put a 1000 kit there and not have to access the 1100 pulsers/advancer. Just install a seal (same as the front cam seals).

Sorry guys, now I've got more questions than answers, I gotta admit, I went into this without even thinking about ignition! Shows too, don't it!!

If I keep it, don't I have to find a GL1000 extended cover?

The C-5 ignition, is it some kind of Hybrid, mechanical/electronic?

I now have 2 sets of heads and the ignition in my original head works great, even if the set in the donor doesn't, is it a real PITA to change them out?

Please just weigh in with advice, with all the work I've done to this bike I never had to get into the ignition timing! thanks.

there is no head switch here the 1000 ignition covers will bolt on 1100 heads ... on my 1200 hooch build 77 bike has 1100 heads in it and 1000 early cams and c5 ignition in it so all options are open to you with the heads your having work done to ...if you don't cut off the stem ... for the one bike I have the angry dresser witch is a 83 1100 with 1000 cams in it .. I ran it awhile with no covers on it with stem sticking out ...

C5 ignition is the newest and best ignition I know of. There is a version for the 1000 and one for the 1100. Using it on the head like the 1000 leaves you full access. 1100 is beyond access unless you are a 3 year old contortionist.

I also swapped to early cams-
I chose (as mentioned by more than one) to keep the ignition drive on there.

This gives me the option to do an easy C5 install. All I had to do was add a 1000 ignition housing...bolted right on.

IMHO you'll a fool to break off the ignition drive......jes' sayin'.....

So I'm sorry to disappoint all you guys that said don't, but I did, I got it machined off, I really needed to, just for now!

I did though secure myself a great '76 left cam that will be held in posterity, (an oil filled zip-lock bag) until it is necessary. After researching it, I just can't afford to do the C5 thing right now!

However, yesterday I picked up my rebuilt heads from Griggs Performance Engines of Spring TX.

I'll post photo's tomorrow as soon as I get the chance.

Before you see the pictures you have to imagine a pair of heads that had already done 100,000 miles in the most adverse conditions available, that would be about how I found them off of eBay.

You ain't gonna believe what you see!

Cool, now you don't have to worry about getting the housing. The C5 is easier to install on the 1000, but I believe it's more precise on the 1100, being driven off the crank so there are no timing variations from belt flex or stretch. Lookin' forward to seeing the "new" heads...

I have no idea how these photo's will turn out but I hope they do them justice, the sun was too bright and the shade too dark.

But be mindful that when I got them, they where rode hard and put up wet & remember the exhaust valves are original.
