Changing out camshafts, '82's for '77's

I have reached a turning point, no longer disassembling, now re-building. I just wanted to share a couple of things with you guys.

First off, in 13 years I have never changed out my coolant, so I was expecting it to come out in brown gloops, instead it flowed like it was brand new.

Second, piston crowns, figured they would be all coked up (considering how long I rode it before Dan taught me how to synchronize,) but instead there was nothing on them that wouldn't come off with a scotch-brite pad.

Plus, HOTT called me today, my manifold and carb is ready tomorrow.

So far I'm one happy camper. :Egyptian: :wave: :smilie_happy:

Okay more questions? This time about valve timing??

It is apparent to me that due to the size of the sprockets the engine turns twice per every one turn of the camshafts, so the T1 mark appears in the window twice, but which time are the cams in the UP position?

Is there a "number X piston should be rising" or similar, in the manual somewhere?

This is the first time since 1984 I ever had the head off a GL1100 and that was only the left side due to a leak, it was easy then, just marked the cam-wheel and put it back the same way. Thanks.

PS. HOTT's manifold fits like a glove, precision stuff, well done that man!!
 
the cam pulleys go one way when belts line up right ... the pully has up on it ....with the pistons all sucked halfway down ... turn the cam to timing mark on cams cover and where the pully says up and it up side to read ... same with other side ...if your doing both ...these spots that are close are valves totally closed...from ther go to T1 and put belts on don't matter on crank till belts are on ...

And Last but not least, Jon Jay of South London. England. best oily rag in existence! for all the faith you showed while I was going where this man had never gone before.

Took it out today, for the first time, awesomely smooth, (and I still have work to do to the Webers mixture,) 32mpg average with all kinds of running, from poodling around in traffic to maxing out the 85 mph speedometer on the freeway. From cruising at 70 to knocking it down 2 gears and whacking the throttle open to 7500 rpm, gotta love those '77 cams!!

Upshot of all this is, I am a convert and will never go back!!

what great pics and successful outcome ....the early cams and the 82 1100 gearing and 100ccs of bigger pistons makes for some real power ....and with the Hott and weber carb package makes for a very few on the planet bike ...i bet your having fun with it ... i am just reading about it ....great effort to all involved :clapping: :clapping: :clapping:
