Can someone please give me some advice on changing the tachometer cable on my 81' Goldwing Interstate?? Are there any videos out there with a tutorial?? Will I have to take off the fairing????? Thanks in advance!

welcome to classic ..my bike is naked so im not sure about the fairing coming off ...if you can get to the back of the tack the cable just unscrews there ..the motor end requires taking the insid bolt out of the fuel pump so the cable can pull out ..im sure routing the cable in will be a bit of a task too on a dresser ..but im sure it can be done

Simplest way to try first is tape the new cable to the old tightly and pull the new in with the old.
There may be a strap of sorts holding the old one in place so you might have to remove the false take to help guide it along.

Thanks for advice guys... I think it will be a bit more complicated for me. I cannot get to the back of the tachometer because of the fairing. Believe I will have to pull it off and it seems it may be a pain. Thanks again!

Removing the windshield should be enough to see and get better access to the cable end.

:headscratch:
I can disconnect both the speedo AND the tach cable while riding down the road on my '81. If you have the factory Hondaline fairing, the cable is simple to get to. Now...to actually CHANGE it out, you'll need to remove the false tank/shelter, as the cable snakes around/thru some pretty tight areas(wiring, etc.).

Here's a pic of the cables, with the fairing off, but the fairing does NOT need to be removed to replace either of the cables. Just turn the bars to the left, and you'll have room to disconnect/connect the tach cable easier. :good:

Thanks again y'all! All the tips have been super helpful... bout to go try to take it off right now!! The good weather is upon us!!!!

O.k... another question... Since the cable broke, there is a loud winding sound that get's louder the faster I go. Does anyone know exactly what that is?

And also, I believe a part of the cable is broke off inside of the tachometer. So, I believe I will have to take the tachometer off completely to get the broken piece out... :thanks:

Ok so I got the tachometer off... was no problem.. But that extremely unbearably loud whining sound is still going on.. Any ideas?? Thanks for the patience guys.. As you can probably tell I'm not the most mechanically savvy!

The piece left inside the cable housing can make a lot of noise. Take it off the drive down by the fuel pump and remove it from the housing.

hmmmmm ..you can take the cable entirely out of the fuel end ..just take the cable loose there and pull the broken cable out ..that sould stop any noise coming from it ..just put the cable housing back in ...

The sounds sounds like it's coming from higher but I'm trying to take it out the housing... When I turn it with my pliers it just keeps on turning and turning.. am I supposed to just pull it out???

Now just waiting for the new cable to come in. Would it be ok to ride without the tach and cable on??
