I also have an 81 in need of head gaskets. Must be that time. I'll check which wheels I have. Maybe we can just swap?

Yeah, I dread the thought of tackling the head gasket issue, but I suppose I will. I have to pull the motor to put in the new stator, so I may as well go all the way and do the head gaskets and belts at the same time. (I really am a terrible mechanic.) I'm definitely tossing the carbs and going with a conversion. Probably the dual carbs for no better reason than I think they look awesome. And I'll probably go with a set of Neon coils.

So much to do. Every time I look at it I see more...

If you need to redo the ignition, I can't recommend the C5 highly enough, it is spendy but it is the best one out there and comes with everything you need including coils.

I'd save the stock exhaust as it looks to be good and solid. Get Jardines pipes or headers and HD take off cans if you want louder. Yes looks like you'll need to change out head gaskets.

Yeah, I need to look at that. Not sure yet of which headers I can use on this. I saw a build on NGW where the guy just had the headers into a very short straight pipe and I liked that look, but I can't find that thread. Thought that maybe with richer running duals I could get away something like that.

Thanks. I appreciate the info. That may have to wait for next year. I don't think I really need to do anything to it at the moment, just thought Neon coils and maybe some Accel 8.8s might be a cheap upgrade--and kind of cool. Think I'll try to get away with the cheaper mod for now. I'm new to all this, so my expenses will already run higher than they might later, when I get some Wing time under my belt.

I'd stick to stock ignition until I could afford c5. 1000 or 1100 headers will fit. As will aftermarket headers for either. If you are a lousy mechanic you'd better be very patient to learn to adapt the dual or single carb conversion. A great deal has been done in single carb conversion but still no definitive step by step set up available. The guys here will happily help you in whatever you choose to do but the actual work and expense will be yours. You'll need to post very descriptively and follow suggestions.

Will do that. I'm terrible but looking forward to trying. I got the bike for $400, so no matter what I do I can't do too much wrong, really. I really love the look of the duals, so I'll probably go that route for no better reason than that. I found the bike I was talking about with the straight pipes and stole a pic--this is what I think I'm looking to do.

Thanks again for the info.

That will be a very loud cafe. Nice look but too loud and uncomfortable for me.

Is there a way to tell which header that is?

That looks to me like a 1000 bike and motor. So I guess those are 1000 header pipes. Might be shorty mufflers from JC Whitney on them.

Looks like one that's just TOO UNCOMFORTABLE for me now. :fiddle: When was young enough to chop this bike, & ride it, it was brand new. :smilie_happy:

I'm fortunate in that I've been riding rigid framed bikes for years and year. It will still feel like a Cadillac for me, and purr like a kitten, straight pipes or no....But yeah, I remember the Wings when they were new and they just seemed huge as huge could be. Good times.
