Well, I'm picking up Option 1 ( I know, I went against the forum) in the morning. 3 hr drive which I don't mind since I have my own trailer now. I actually was going to go with option 2 but something didn't feel right. The owner was giving me this long story how some of the parts were taken while he was out of state working. I asked if it had been stored inside and he never responded. This morning he took the bike ad off from craigslist.

Option 1 at least runs and the owner says it occasionally floods, so I can start with the carbs. As far as the pipes being modified, I plan on changing them anyway.
I will be sure to get pics out upon my return tomorrow.
Wish me luck! Another adventure starts tomorrow :rocks:

44,000 miles and runs. Not bad. Carb clean should fix the flooding issue. I wouldn't bother trying to adjust the carbs until I changed the exhaust though.

Good that you went with your feel for the seller. :good:
When we bought our 74 Kombi in Sydney back in 1987 we went to the "good" condition 2l closer to home. It was bleeding oil while running and the whole nose was stove in.
The "fair" condition one was an hours drive away only a 1600 engine but had a pop top camper conversion and was less money and would of been in excellent condition in comparison to the good condition 2l one.
We still have it now in poor condition and I have been told that it needs to be in excellent condition for early May( wife's 60th) :head bang:

I know what a Kombi is mate  I'm originally from Cape Town. We had one we used a lot when going to soccer games as a kid. Those were the days. I miss Cape Town. Still have to get my American wife over there for a visit.
Good luck on your Kombi :eek:k:

Made it home safe and sound. Bike is going to take quite a bit of work. I'm still working on a theme. PO has a horrible rattle can job on it. Rust in tank, etc, etc. He welded some weird pieces to the cutoff muffler, so that will definitely go. Anyway, I'm taking my time on this and will keep this one.
Enjoy the pics.

Oh, the fairing looks like a 78 not an 80. It's tied on with bailing wire.

Old style vetter fairing. Not sure what look the po was going for but the paint scheme does look good in the pics.

Yeah, paint is shot. Looks good from afar but has runs and chipping.
So far I have found the following parts missing: Overflow tank and airbox cover, other than that, not bad for $200.

By airbox cover, do you mean the cover on top of the air filter? If so, I might have one.

Yes. I'm just now noticed that I'm also missing the little plastic storage cylinder tank that hooks on the lower left side behind the engine. Attached a pic .
