Stock carbs aren't a nightmare lol.

Just be methodical like you have been, read up on everything you can find about them, do one carb at a time so as not to mix up parts, and only open them as far as needed to fix the problem.

Turn the fuel off and run it until it sputters then turn it on. See if it clears up. Best to shut the fuel off a minute or two before shut down.

Wow, it worked :clapping: What happened?

Running until it sputters lets the floats drop far enough to open the needle valves a lot then turning it back on flushes whatever debris was in there away from the needle seat.

Okay. Thanks.
I'm still going to attempt to clean them ,since I have the fuel vapor coming out of tailpipe again, which comes and goes. Tried the ATF already. At least I have the leak stopped. Much appreciated :good:

A lot of stuff works that way!

When I had 4 carbs. I would, every Winter turn off my gas petcock for the duration.

Then every Spring I'd turn it back on, only to see gas pouring from the carbs.

All those O rings get cold and hard, dry out and don't seal properly.

Of course, I don't get that issue anymore.

This is an 81 carb rack? If so you'll need some drywall screws and a hammer and wire cutters to get the jets out for cleaning.

I see quite a few of you have switched to a single carb and from what I have read, it's best to stick with stock since the single carb can interfere with the dynamics of the engine , ie: horsepower and such. If this is untrue, how easy is it to switch to one carb?

Stock carbs or single carbs require fiddling and adjustments. Easiest single so far seems to be a one barrel solex on VW type 4 manifold using grab bars as runners.

methodical one step at a time approach makes either stock or single carbs do able projects. Once past the fear of the unknown you'll be fine.

yes 81. will do.

As Dan and Slab said, methodical and one carb at a time, single carbs an work great, but it does require tweaking and tinkering.

well i cant speak for all that have singles but ...on mine bike there is no comparison between stock carbs and stock ...to me its like the difference from stock ignition and c5 ignition ...the c5 iggy is in another zone of timing ....ive also been told no one has gone as far or would go as far as i have in single carb mods ..to match car carb to motor ....to me ill never go with stock carbs on any oldwing i have

I tapped the screwdriver handle with a hammer forcing the drywall screws in. Then used the wire cutters to lever the screws up pulling the jets. I leave the screws in and clean the jets there is a barrier built in. Then use the screws to tap the jets back in place after cleaning then back out the screw. My screws only lasted 3-4 jets then I needed another fresh screw.

Uh uh. The easiest is, without a doubt, the HOTT manifold coupled with a Tom Langdons stovebolt Weber, Quit trying to lead the dude astray!

Ask Dan about the Stovebolt carb. Read about dkl's set up and tomforemans set up. Read every thread using the progressive weber 2brl. Remove this plug that adjust this bend that try this jet or maybe that jet. Solder and drill jets etc. etc. If you think that's easy great. I disagree.

Okay it works great for you. Peachy! Have you added heat? Are you getting 40+ mpg? Are your plugs black? what is wholly acceptable to you may be entirely unacceptable to others. Did you make your manifold? Did you set up the carb? Or did Hott do that for you? We all differ in experience and desires and views. You don't like mine obviously but in no way does that make it wrong.

Ooooh! Bitchy huh!

HOTT made the manifold. Yes he did. Without a doubt.

I, personally made the decision to change out the carb, for a T.L. Stove-bolt Weber

After some guy in Canada (I guess) gave me some really bad advice on here about swapping the jets around.

The "thing" An '82 goldwing that I've spent 15 years getting right ain't ever ran better.

So if you wanna lose 15 years of experience on here, go right ahead and cut me off.

You have that power!!
