Good morning Joe. A question for you on the timing covers. I got my heads mounted, and valves set. I was tossing covers around and it looks like there is a gap in the center?? The 1200 covers could be modified, but not easily. Did you use the 1200 backplates, the ones that mount to the heads? I kind of like the looks of them open, but the tensioners may not last long in the weather, and it's conceivable that a rock could get dragged into them and that would be all she wrote. Thanks in advance for any responses.

well eric the right side backcover is the same as 1000-1100s ...the left side is different with that huge lip ...eric way to much work to me to leave open belts ...but me live in gravel country and that would be insane here.....but in general ... i say no eric to that for you to to much work here for you to chance that ...the 1000 cover mod is rather hard and dosnt fit in the center theres a small gap ....plus the inside bolt hole is in wrong place to and its a real hatchet job to get that to work ....on my bike that is essentualy a 771000 look a like...it makes sense for me to use 1000 covers ....on your bike ...with tank mod and all ....its more custom than mine and fabing 1000 covers is not that big a deal ...in your shoes id just use the 1200 covers and carfully do the skight frame impression for the 1200 cover s to work ....at this point an d before i discovered the problem ....you need to redrill the 1200 left side belt back cover to bolt up to the 1000 heads your useing before cam pulley and belts go on .....in no way is modifying the 1000 covers as good as just 1200 covers put on and the mod to left back cover done ...

test ride is in ...iran great ...i was very easy on it but did pull with it a couple times ....the gearing is going to be fine for a street bike ...there is no clutch work to get this going the carb set up seems fine ...the pull was huge even from low rpm ...heck even from stop ...this is helmet yanking sore neck type deal if you aint ready for it ...5th gear has quite a spead from 4th and on the short hiway run id id it seemed to cruise just fine ...tack not working so have no ideal what it was at 60mph but it seemed okay and in a good zone ....theres no doutb that the sound on the video translates into performace on the road ...as i said i was easy on it and never got anywhere near where cam and all realy kick in it just not time i dont have much seat time in this bike at all ...so ill keep things sane till everything is known about bike and the drivesaft is fixed .....

the bike is not for sale as other 1200 mod bikes have been ...to me i see this as total success now and this bike is a monster of torque and it it is geared to prove it ....5th seems to be about like stock 1000 and this rest of the gearing is from the dragstrip world ....its quite the package as i thought it would be ....im very pleased thrilled and feel things words dont discribe... :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :lust: :lust: :lust:

So...tell us how ya really feel! :smilie_happy:

Great news, Joe.... :clapping: :yahoo: :clapping:

thanks everyone on the comments ...bill where you at om the the 79 ?.....dan on the numbers game hooch is lower geard in first than 83 and fifth is lower too it seems to be like stock 1000 in fifth ....on the running side this make hooch way more powerful ...there seems to be as big or bigger leap here than what the angry dresser was over the stock 83 some of this is entirely gearing ...but i must say the 1200 mod is potent ....i havnt even come close to trying hard this was just a trans test ...for a answer to your question ..its might and day difference between the two bikes ...hooch is going to stomp stock 1800s like there tied to a pole im sure the 83 was a challenge for a 1800 ...hooch will not get embarassed by anything ...anything will not beat it im sure ...something special might ...some of the biiggest moderin rockits maybe ...but they will be pushing themselfs to do so ....is what it seems like to me right now ...just mot enough seat time yet to give good assesment really ...except i see this as a total success beyond expectations :music:

i'm still waiting for my mater cylender and calabers to get here. then i got to find my turn signal wires and horns.and make front turn signal lites work. don't want to tair into the 78 eight till i check it out .i think it will run with a little encuregement. miss daisy will go now but i don't want to run to much without rear brakes.

thanks carl .....................today was cold ...hoooch had a a time starting up i couldnt get back to the doghouse with hooch it rained hard and was to wet so even under tarp it got quite wet ...choke cable frooze keyswitch frooze .....started right up but wouldnt stay going with out choke .....so it didnt run today as of yet plus ineed to go over the front brakes having problems there with sticking......

i did take the plugs out today they look just like they did when i put them in there ....i mean no residue at all that i can tell ...just hasnt ran long enough to tell anything yet ...except there is no obvious differeence in any of the plugs period .....

its like 28degrees out .....brrrrrrr

I would love to see 28 degrees, Joe. I am sure you will keep an eye on the rubber connectors to the carbs. I am wondering if they'll need some nursing along the way. If they do, it may not hurt to try and support the rack somehow to keep them from coming loose. Not too many examples like yours out there to gain insight from.

cool post to make i got hooch running wasnt hard realy just needed a boost with jumpers once running ran fine ...here the deal the last ride i did it seemed to start missing some and acting like it did before when the 1000 motor was in it and running then start cutting out ...so i went over everything in my mind ...and the only common deal left that stayed the same from the 1000 running and hooch was the wires from the battery box where the points and condenser hook up or dyna would hook up ...and these wires run from there to the coils no break up at all till they get to coil connectors .....

so today i wired around those wires the blue and the yellow ...just after the last post i made here today ....jumped hooch off ....and it appears i finaly found the problem either the blue or yellow wire is weak and cutting out right in the wire ...iran hooch awhile it hasnt wavered at all and when i finally shut it off i reved it it it was instant and quick just all race engine like ....

so with these old bikes you never know what might be the difference in night and day running of your wing ......iggy is huge guys just huge ...these plugs were gap huge on the motor looks about 40 ...it the way the mongrel was set up before i took the perfectly good running bike apart ...the ends are resistorless im sure thats the way i did it ...i didnt check it out so you know my memory is a liar ...but i think i got this one.......

i have been missing with this 77 a long time ...major problem that took bike down probably 20yrs ago when last registred and finaly fixed ...a srtait piece of wire ...sheeesh  :fishin: :fishin: :fishin: lots of fishing to catch that wire  :hihihi:

word is getting around some interested in hoochers came by and wanted a listen well hooch kick ass sitting still with his pipes of power ...they were jaw droped hooch left no doutb about it...and ran it smooth up high back off and decelleration was something to hear ..just as impressive as going up ...that impressed me .....had fun doing that for sure ....good way to end the day after spitting wood for most of it ...

been splitting wood all morning going to stop soon and work on hooch got front brake work to do and some rewire on ignition .......its cold but kinda nice if hooch was ready id go ride

Buttoned mine up last night. The 1200 covers go on but rub the frame just a bit on the right side. I took a sanding wheel and ground down a bit on the cover and it fits snuggly with a little clearance. The only problem with the 1200 covers is they tell people it's a 1200 not a 1000. I may mess more with the 1000 covers later. My 1200 covers are road rashed or rashed by something. I also put my 1200 headers on. They look they bolt on like 78-79's, pretty tight to the frame on the left side, but they follow the contour of the frame nicely, the upsweep after the footpegs.

the exhast would be further away if you hadnt milled the heads to death ....just kidding eric ...it will be interesting to see how this gose on your build ..im glad you decided to stick with stock carbs at least till its running ....your bike need to move along now ...we all know it works now from me that unknown is gone totally by hooch ...so get going eric to get it done
