I think first order is check for spark,
then compression,
then gas.
At least that's what I would do.

Skiri, if you find all that good and think the coils or ignitors might be at fault, I have all the stock parts for you.

Good question... CA traffic laws or U-Haul paperwork? ... U-Haul calls them trucks... that the middle one?

The paperwork doesn't say clearly.. I don't have patience or eye-sight to read all the fine print (sigh).
I will ask u-haul when I return it.

The engine started so the spark must be there.
I will do the compression.

And thanks for the offer. I still have the stock parts also.

And some pleasant pics LOL.

Taken right after the first act-up.

I had that problem once. Turned out to be fule filter output had colapsed. Don'r over think the problem, do the simple things first.

Well it happened with old and new fuel filters, old and new fuel pumps...

Nice pictures gives some pleasure to the problem... Nice shot of Morro Rock..

Thanks!

Certainly it was a "memorable" trip. LOL

BTW, I am slightly disappointed by AMA's roadside assistance.

First I had to be on hold for a few minutes because "all the agents are currently assisting other customers".
Then the lady I talked to didn't know what she was doing (although she said she did..)
I was asked what state I was in.. I was in a desperate state by the side of the freeway. She wanted to know which state I was in e.g. CA.
I didn't know this was nation wide service. Can't they tell which state I was calling from?
And their "automatic vehicle location" failed so I had to explain where I was to this lady probably operating outside of CA.

I think AAA got much better roadside assistance. (Unfortunately I needed it several times in the past..)
At least I didn't have to tell them I was in CA.

Along the coast is a beautiful ride.
I have a coast ride to Oregon on my list.

Long before our son was born, my wife and I flew to San Francisco from New York, rented a car and drove down all the way to San Diego.
I thought this trip would remind me of the route we took but I didn't remember it at all.. (old age?)

Yes, Oregon and Washington then B.C. Canada all the way to Alaska on Alaska hwy.. That will be great..

Breaking down around my neck of the woods (really woods doesn't fit as that would mean trees and we have none) would make explaining my location a true challenge I can see myself telling them I am not really sure I asked the cows in the field but they won't answer me

Most of us today have cell phones. My phone will give me my exact location within seconds. It is a nice feature when needed, my GPS will do the same thing. I realize not all travel with a GPS, I love mine, it tells me how to get home.

Skiri nice photos and sorry about turning a good trip into a bad? Adventure. Did you fit the electric parallel pump because of a drain back problem initially and how long did the bike need to sit before that was an issue? In all honesty I am in the faulty ignition camp but you usually should get some backfiring etc with intermittent ignition faults. When this happens again I would pull a spark plug and make sure that you have spark and good spark at that. You can also get a spark viewer tool that goes in line so that you can actually see the spark while the engine is running. Good luck with your hunt!! :head bang:

My cell phone is a cheapo PayAsYouGo thing from ATT (obviously it's not a smart phone). Maybe that's why their auto tracking failed?

I did have GPS w/o me. I completely forgot about it when I broke down. But again it is a cheapo ($100 range) one for a car so I cannot see anything on the motorcycle under bright sunshine. So I quickly tacked it in the tank bag. And I haven't convinced myself to pay for $600 Garmin Zumo yet.

I had mechanical/electrical pumps hooked up in parallel for... say... 200 miles of riding. During that, I did a round trip to Chino Airplane Museum on freeway 90 (one hour each way) no cut-offs what-so-ever then.

My first engine hick-up was last Saturday while I went out for buying stuff for this camping trip. The engine cut off followed by a big bang (after fire). Exactly the same symptom when I had clogged gas tank vent (now there are two drilled holes). But it happened only once and it was okay after that so I kind of ignored it.

Sunday morning on freeway 110, it cut off again. I switched on electrical fuel pump and no more cut off. I switched it off briefly and the cut off came back so I convinced myself it was a failing mechanical fuel pump. Later that day after 200 miles or so I noticed mechanical pump leaking gas. So I completely disconnected it from fuel path but two fuel Ts remained. Because of this there was a loop formed in the remaining fuel path. But the hose was kinked and not much gas looping. I think I had brief cut offs maybe once in a few hours. Mainly on take off non-freeway riding.

Monday morning 100 mile ride was uneventful. No cut offs I think, until that first major act-up.
On 101 heading back, cut offs got more and more frequent. I was doing 70 MPH, all of a sudden no engine power followed by a huge bang (after fire).

I am afraid it is ignition too. Hopefully it is faulty relay which feeds 12V from battery to ignition. But if this is overheating issue, it is not as clear cut to prove/disprove what is faulty. I guess I should blow hot air gun to various components and see if I can re-produce that cut off... Obviously I don't want to do it on the freeway.. LOL

Well, my Oldwing is unloaded thanks to the usual landscapers and safely sits in the garage. I got to go and return this u-haul truck/van thing.

Definitely electrical with the back fires IMHO. I use cool spray or water to diagnose coil faults that occur in hot conditions which would be the majority that I encounter. If they are faulty make the plan for C5 long term as the selectable advance curve from what Brian has reported should be a bonus with your side car rig
