Ok...so maybe I made a mistake, only time will tell. Saw an add on Craigslist for a Honda Goldwing, so I went and took a look. Got a little carried away, and now I own it.

It is a 1982 GL1100, and has about 57,000 miles on it.

What next? The maintenance records end at about 44,000 miles, the last owner swore he did the maintenance, but just didnt write it down. The bike looks pretty good, considering the mileage, has never been laid down, etc. But What do I have to do to keep this monster purring for another 57,000 miles?

There don't seem to be any issues with it. I noticed a bit of oil on the bottom, but it looks like it is seeping around the oil change plug. I will change the oil this week. What else should I change? Which filters, etc???

I remember sitting on one of these when they were brand new at a Honda shop. Have not ridden for many years but used to love it. The wife is being pretty open-minded all things considered.

Welcome to the CGW Forums, AlaskaWing!!! :clapping: :clapping: :clapping:

Welcome to the forums. I know we have a thread on "new-2-U" Wings and what to do but I can't find it at the moment.

But here's some advice:

Change all fluids and filters(oil/gas)
Change timing belts
DO THE 3-WIRE STATOR MODIFICATION!
Change final drive oil
Check all fasteners/bolts(especially the fairing mounts).

Anyway that's a start, many will chime in with other advice.

Thanks Omega, I found a step by step PDF on another site that is a pretty good walkthrough on the timing belt, but wow that looks like it would be easy to make a costly mistake on.

Welcome to the forums, AlaskaWing.

~O~ nailed it pretty good.

I always say back off the valve adjusters when doing the belts.
It not only reduces the risk of valve damage but it takes the problem of the one cam gear needing to be held in place out of the picture.

Well, I guess I have a little time to get it ready. My motorcycle endorsement expired about 15 years ago and the wife wont let me ride my bike until I get it updated. Which means taking a class because there is no way I am going to pass an operators test with as wobbly as I was on the corners driving it home. I guess I will have to take one of those classes that use smaller bikes to get endorsed.

Welcome aboard. Taking the beginners course is an excellent idea. You will learn and unlearn a lot. All good really.

Hi AlaskaWing...I welcomed you but the post didn't seem to make it...here again and welcome you to a very good group.

I lived the last ten years of a 22 winter life in Alaska, in Sterling...and wrenched for the Kenai Wildlife Refuge....until I retired....
