Hey Bud my stepson lives in Russia - next time you look out your kitchen window wave to him for me (do you live close to Sara Palin?)

Thank you for all the welcomes. Alaska is nice, but our riding season is pretty short. THere is a very real hazard of hitting a Moose on the highway too. One of my coworkers pointed out that the cost of my liability insurance could be cut in half simply by only insuring the bike while I can ride it, and not having it insured while it is in storage.

There is a Goldwing rally up here in late July, anybody coming????

@ 1060GL, your stepson waved back. and no, dont know Sarah Palin, but if I bump into her I will get her autograph for you.

Ok, I think I got this part figured out.

Welcome to the forums. I know we have a thread on "new-2-U" Wings and what to do but I can't find it at the moment.

But here's some advice:

Change all fluids and filters(oil/gas)
Change timing belts
DO THE 3-WIRE STATOR MODIFICATION!
Change final drive oil
Check all fasteners/bolts(especially the fairing mounts).

Anyway that's a start, many will chime in with other advice.

~O~

Is there good source for filters, etc for this part of the project? I see them for sale on E-bay, but does NAPA carry them??? Is there parts numbers I should be asking for?

I found a thread on changing the oil filter, are there others for air filter etc??? I really hate to tear this thing apart looking for the right thing.

I used to have liability insurance on 5 or 6 bikes at once up there and Progressive through my membership in American Motorcyclist Assoc. cost me about $50 per year per bike. They took into account that it was in storage for at least half the year.

These days I pay a lot less than that for the 5 bikes we keep insured here in New Mexico where we ride year round though. I use Dairyland and it comes to about $200 a year total....

Finished the motorcycle safety course, got the liscence! Now my wife will let me ride this awesome bike! YES!!!!
Congrats!!

Now time to RIDE.

plus 1 on that ...take it on the easy side and realy get to know your wing ...it is part of you now....it takes a good year to realy know your bike and thats if you wok at the whole time ...have fun and be careful you and the bike are just starting again

So... I never did get to really ride my 82 GL 1100 wing last summer. I ended up signing up for 9 credits of tough college courses. :laptop:

So my poor bike spent the summer sitting, because I was too afraid to ride it without doing the maintenance, but never had the time. THen I ended up just putting it in a shed for the winter. :nea:

When I took it out of the shed, it would not start. :crying: TUrns out that all I needed was a new battery, I should have removed mine over the winter. The trickle charger did not stay plugged in. :head bang:

With a new battery it fired right up, idles good, etc. :yahoo:

When I ride it, it makes an awful lot of noise. Squeeking, rattling, clicking...I got out a can of WD40 and sprayed the front and rear wheel bearings, and that quieted down a lot of it. I still hear a clicking from up by the front, either the front wheel area or possibly the instrument cluster. It seems to be related to the speed of the bike, not the RPM of the engine. I am trying to figure out if I can lubricate the speedometer cable.

I remembered that this forum was very helpful and welcoming, so I thought I would look around here a bit to see if anybody knew how to do it.

The cable simply screws into the bottom of the speedometer. Shoot some oil into it, and spray some up into the speedometer - if you can - and it should quiet down nicely. A single philips screw holds the lower end of the cable in the gear housing.

I looked in the manuals for a specific cable lube recommendation, but found nothing. I've used ATF, motor oil and WD-40, and they all seem to work OK. Anyone out there have any suggestions?
