Ok ok, back on topic.

I'll have some time today to play with those stars.
Probably something simple.

You son was probably right.
Both IE and Firefox have a setting to tell them what is the default font used, usually it's set to system default BUT some malicious web pages do change it and not all fonts have a star.

Firefox 6 look under options/content (I use Times New Roman but thats just my personal preferance).
Havn't a clue how to change IE offhand as I refuse to use it.

I seriously doubt that it is a OS problem.

My first system was a customized Apple ][+ 128k memory with 8 programable function keys.
What version of windows did you try to install on that 268? I seem to recall running Win 3.11 on a 286 640k no problem.

To solve this I went and changed the stars to a bullet, the character above the 8 on your keyboard.
Every computer should be capable of displaying it I would think.
