well yes i hav a three ft long hose gavity feed tank ....this plenty of flow ....probably more so tham the fuelpump.....witch is very low pressured and yes the float seats stop the gas flow till the floats move down and start to flow gas again.....its a simple test and yes the ggas will come right out the venturris ....you can open the butterflys also to see better......i usealy let the stop test go for and hr or two to make sure they dont leak ..... :builder:

Got the tubing waiting for a block of time.

So....If i do as directed and fill till they stop filling - then I'll know....which floats need adjusting-cool and I get it. the gas level is
should be just below the bowl gasket.
that is almost full over the top correct?

I am so looking forward to doing this and sorting out what is up/learning how to trouble shoot these things. I know one thing I would not be here if it weren't for this forum...thanks for stickin with me...

Oh and riding this pigdog i mean oldgirl would be an added bonus!!

I've got a parts tank I could use no? I think it's clean.....i'll have to check
I use the tank in the bike! Fill it up all the way and disconnect the gas line from the petcock and run a longer piece of hose from the petcock to the carbs. Open the petcock and gas will flow real fast!

While you have the carbs out. Check all the linkage is right. I've read where some have had linkage tying one side to the other loosen which could open two carbs earlier than the other two.

gonna do that and:

the float valves
jets - like poke every hole in those things.
floats
floats
floats
cv slides - how loose can those things be and still create the proper vacuum? They slide but I wouldn't call them slippery..

plan on seeing this thread light up Sat. - which is when I have time...

thanks

If it seems to be accelerating and running ok at speed then your secondary jets and slides are probably ok. With one side running hotter at idle concentrate on making certain every tiny passage and jet is clear in the idle circuit.
And look for looseness and play in the throttle shafts. A very small amount is ok.

About the slides since you'll have them out, with the slides and springs in the caps the slide should bounce freely.

Update:

Dan you were on to something. I checked the idle jets using a guitar string to poke the holes and such. Well 2/4 the cool/weak side idle jets were clogged as in the main hole through the jet. the smaller holes were ok. could explain the weak side exhaust/lack of power on 2/4 at idle.

All the mains were fine as were the needle valves. I looked at those under a magnifying glass - smooth as a baby's butt. couldn't see a prob. there.

Did the float test with the clear tubing. All filled to the proper level just below the top. Carbs are getting fuel.....

next up - give the CV sliders a go round/another polish.

anything else I should do short of opening these up again (which I really don't want to do if I don't have to)?

back to 3 turns out on the idle mix screws....

looking forward to seeing the affect of clearing those two idle jets.....

I got my rabbits foot at the ready.

If this does it I am gong to c e l e b r a t e!

I ordered some wires and caps to finish out the fix. Might even install the dyna coils I bought for the project.

I am expecting it to go go go.......

Ya'll will be the first to know!!

thanks could not have done it without you guys!

Hi Guys.

Put the second set of fixed carbs on the bike and fired it up. It ran really high revs 4-5 k briefly until I shut is down. I then realized I had played with the idle screw the last time they were on. dialed that back out and things were much improved.

I didn't have a chance to check things to the T but looks promising preliminarily.

no weak left side. even push out the exhaust. and both exhausts warmed up what seemed like the same temp or really close to it.

the two oddities I noticed were:

when I took the previous set of carbs off - the #2 intake @ the head was full of GAS! I suctioned it out and sucked it up with a rag.

Then saw some oil dripping out the exhaust on #4. I tightened the exhaust bolts on both sides - they were loose. But correct me if I am wrong - oil is not supposed to drip out the exhaust port.
I didn't see it coming out the heas gasket......maybe it was a fluke...

I've got some wires/plugs/and boots coming - I plan on swapping those out along with maybe the coil......

Still need to do a sync and a test ride....but initially I am encouraged and notice a big change - but then I thought that the last time.....

onward and upward..

There are definitely problems with #2 and 4 carbs.

The gas in number 2 was caused by that float bowl over filling when the engine was off.
That tells me right there that float or seat is a problem.

What looked like oil could have been gas that washed the exhaust port of carbon then dripped out.
I would watch and see if does it more.

Running rich like that will make those cylinders run cold so we're on the right track.

The crankcase and oil might have gotten gas in it. Give it a wiff.
Would be a good idea to change the oil if so and always turn the fuel petcock to off when parked.

At least with the gas on the set I took off hopefull the new set doesn't have that problem.

and yes there was def. a problem - clogged friggin idle jet!

Would be a good idea to change the oil
I was thinkin that - done.

my sentiments exactly JD!
