It's been sunny and warm here for 3 days , and it has been a Loooong Coooold Winter , so, I have had the Sand Dust a-flyin' , next is gonna be clean the Carbs, and put a new set of Timing Belts on her , what do you folks think about Belts ??? are they all pretty much the same ??? I used to Manage a Truck Stop Garage , we sold Gates belts , but really I don't know that they was any better or worse than any other kind . But I would like to know what you folks think on that.

I think any major brand is fine. Hard to know where anything comes from these days with just about everything made in China.
I would stay away from Saber Cycle and JC Whitney. Their quality is questionable, and pay attention to the age of the belts. This is why I think Gates belts are better than Honda originals as long as they are not very old, we don't know how long they've been in storage but as with anything rubber it should smell fresh and feel soft.

Thanks Dan , thats what I wanted to know , and yes I know what you mean about not knowing where things come from anymore. ... I'm trying to get this Goldwing ready for Paint by the time the weather is warm enough to Paint , This bike only has 45,000 miles on it , but , I have no Idea if the belts have been replaced or not , and I don't want to take a chance. I really think if I clean the Carbs , and tune it up , and new Belts , it should be all I need .... Thanks again for the advice.

I just replaced the belts on the one I purchased recently and I went with Napa and the belts I got from them definitely weren’t old rubber. I’m not sure but I think Goodyear makes the belts for Napa.

As I’m sure you know 70 degrees is just perfect for paint. What color are you going to paint it.

good deal , what did they cost you at NAPA ??? .... yeah it's been Cold and bad weather here , the last 3 days is the first time it has been in the 50's this year. I'm trying to get it ready by spring .... as for Color , I'm thinking Ivory , with maybe Platinum trim , ..... but, both those colors might change... :smilie_happy:

Check this thread on timing belts and other parts...it has the NAPA part number, as well as a couple of other part numbers. :good:

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh, and a much better price too , almost Half Price , Gates $16.27 to NAPA $26.99 thanks, NAPA is always a little higher around these parts. ... thanks again.

That color combo would look really nice I think. Bit more work going with multiple colors but worth the effort. Are you going to go with a two stage paint? I've got my 80 preped for paint but has been too cold to shoot, don't have access to a heated booth.

As for the price on the belts, like has been said mid thirties for the pair.

I like Arcrylic Enamel myself , I'm just an old school kind of guy I guess, It's just what I know best , Yeah I built my Garage so.......no heated booth either , I'm tryin' to be ready by the time it gets 70 degs, Goin' this evening and buy the timing belts , and a gallon of Carb. Cleaner ..... wish me luck.......LOL

Nothing wrong with the acrylic enamels they can produce a nice finish and a lot safer than urethane. I won’t shoot urethane anymore without a fresh air supply, too risky for me.

I’m sure all will work out well for you.

well , No Belts anywhere around here , unless I get them from the Honda Shop , for something like $57 Each. . I staopped there after all the auto parts places and had the Honda dealer make me a new key, my old key had the plastic piece where you hold it off , but....... I was only in One Town, next time I'm out, I'll go in the other direction... :smilie_happy:

Kragen is usually pretty good about ordering them, a day or 2.
I use a local independent auto parts, good guys and they have what I need the same day or next at good prices and it makes me feel good to support the small business.

I deal with Napa almost on a daily basis, if you can't get someone to order them for you, I'll get you a set and send them to you, or put you in touch with a Napa that will, but really it shouldn't be a big deal and I wouldn't give Honda that kind of money for them.

Just a followup, I spoke to my Napa guy a little while ago. He said youi can go to Napa on line and they will ship the belts to you.

That's awesome, I never thought of doing it that way!

whats up sledge been a long winter, itchen to do something now the weather leaning towards spring. im sure whatever colors you choose will look great, on changing timing belts its a pain to get the covers off to change the belts so when i put it back together the two inside bolts i left out and filled the hole with shortys, so when put back together all i have to do is take the outside bolts out to get the covers off. it makes checking belts an easy job. theres a short bolt that has to be put in pulley to if i remember right. just a thought.
