She was a little tricky to start, as the starter never spun very fast, but a bit of coercion would get her singing.... but the battery wasn't charging! Tired of jumpstarts, I bought a stator and regulator, saving the alternator project for next time. Also replaced the rectifier. And of course the starter...

(Some assembly required) (fast forward >>>)

Taadaa! Starter spins like crazy!
Yes, oil and water added first...

No fire. No fire. No fire.... carb pop!
Shot of go juice down the carbs, same result.
Pulled all the plugs, slightly moist. Cleaned, reinstalled. Verified plug wire locations.
Strong spark at all 4.
Lots of cranking (and cooling) cycles. Lots of double checks. No left over parts...
Couple of sporatic carb pops, one good exhaust gunshot....

Now what?!? :help: :help: :Awe:

Kill switch? :hi: Probably not, just a thought, make sure all connections are reconnected, & check your work :salute:

Pulser cam 180° out? Switched blue and yellow wires, and it didn't even attempt to backfire.... so I put em back.
Instead of carb cleaner, I threw in a splash of gas and she wants to run!!!

Pulled the fuel pump outlet hose, and there's plenty of pressure and flow.
Eased back the bottom screws in the carbs and they all drip.
Needles stuck?

hmmmmmm got to be something small . ...im guessing you put the stator in right ?.....if so the back cover was off motor ......and the ignition had to come out ....there a pin on that shaft that fits loose and can fall out easy ...and not noticed ...when it dose the pulsars can slip around on shaft and timming is screwed ...and it will not start and stay running without slipping ...if it ran before and not now id say it highly likely this is it ...it happen to me once ...what a sloppy pin fit it is ....

i seen in another thread where he did change stator ...i bet for sure this is it ...its a bitch to get to and fix but the rear ignition is all that has to come out ....the pin is probably inside it ...

+1 on the roller pin in the pulser shaft. I had an 83 that was missing the pin and it gave me a fit until I noticed the pulser shaft was not turning as I was cranking it over. :head bang:

Part Number 96220-40178 applies. 63 cents from Western Honda, $8 for shipping. I ground down a roller bearing from a Chevy u-joint and it worked fine. :builder:

Remember, we do this because it is fun.

The carbs sat for a few months off the bike... I'm thinking something is all gummed up. I can pour a splash of gas down her neck, and it will purr for about 3 seconds.

Notice how I'm avoiding the topic that requires removing the motor? Lol... Honestly, it's not that bad...
If it's coming back out, I'm going to do timing belts and the neutral light switch... The right head has a helicoil on one plug that doesn't feel too sturdy, maybe I'll see if I can pick up a head for cheap...

Hmmmm...this scenario sounds vaguely familiar....

Exact same thing I went thru after changing my stator....

And then.....

If it purrs momentarily, the problem is not the pulser pin.

If you have gas in the bowls and it is not getting to the cylinders, pull the carbs and clean them thoroughly. You will need some very small single strand wire to clean the jets.

Mike Nixon's The Motorcycle Project, covers fuel as well as a large number of other subjects. :read: :thank_you:

I checked out your post Aapple, looks like you painted the pulser cover too? I got into this hydrodipping craze, and threw mine down in some snake skin. I might have to do more, since this cover will never be seen!

Why do all my photos get turned sideways??

Three jets completely blocked. One with pin hole passage. Now she fires right up with throttle, but won't idle at all. Gets real rough under 2500 rpms, and dies the second the throttle is released. Smokes like crazy. Pulser problem N/A.

I think you're asking the wrong group about pictures, but I'll try.
Your photos are turned sideways because: You have an inverted view, your spectrum is tilted, the left side of the picture is heavier than the bottom, (too many electrons), yellow & purple are denser colors than aluminum. :Egyptian:

Idle jets are a possibility, :headscratch: read about how to clean, they CAN come out, be cleaned, & reused. :builder:
