Anyone have any issues with running open headers on a gl1000. As a former harley rider i love a strong sound on my bike. Are there any problems with open headers on a gl1000? I want to make some custom tips to fasten right onto the headers and eliminate my mufflers. I love the sound.

i would do like we used to do with our drag car's, after the collector(where the pipes come together), add a piece of straight pipe, about a foot long, and with a spray can, spray a stripe of paint from front to rear,go run the heck out of it and where the paint quits burning dark, cut the pipe off and you have close to the pipe the motor likes. just don't go too short as when you get out of the throttle, it may pull cold air up the exh. and warp a exh. valve.

Regardless how it's done it won't make the neighbors happy or folks in traffic. That said you still need to have a little back pressure. You will also need more flow from the carbs. The stock CV carbs are a bit difficult to adapt for this but I'm sure it's possible.

And they probably used the washer trick inside the pipes to create back pressure and reduce the flow.

The reason i ask is because i literally lost my left muffler today in traffic. I had no idea, i didnt feel or hear anything (i was going about 110). I pulled up to a light and noticed the bike was a bit louder but i had just reinstalled everything when i did my head gaskets and thought maybe i just needed to snug the bolts up on the headers. I was shocked when i looked down and the entire muffler was gone! I have no idea how this happened. I know everything was tight. The bolt that holds the muffler to its bracket was still on the bike. I think the bracket busted off the muffler itself. More handy work from the PO. Anyway, now i have one side with and one side without a muffler. But the bike sounds awesome! So i figured i would take the other side off and make it match.

That being said i have a plan of adding some custom tips, maybe 12" long or so made out od stainless steel. I can make the bore in the end smaller to choke the pressure down and maintain some back pressure.

Sounds workable. Just watch the plugs close for a while to be sure they aren't burning from low back pressure and if you get decel popping a little more back pressure should stop it.

I know too open a flow seems to reduce torque but it is nice to be heard. The stock 4 into 2 is almost GW quiet on my CBRs luckily I have some noisy 4 into 1s that aren't very social but I love them. As they have plenty of power any loss of torque doesn't seem to be a problem ( maybe engine braking?) :moped: :smilie_happy:

I,agree.i had a russ Collins 4 into 1 header.on my 78 wing.went to easyriders rodeo.in Kankakee, ill.the gate guys thought I was a pack of bikes.i slash cut-it.and ran it open.wish,i never sold that ,bike. :moped: :music:

Ed Zachary what we always did, too. But a drag engine, and a daily driver are two different amnimals. You do need some back-pressure on the exhaust for constant rpms. A washer, or other small restriction in the pipe works quite well.

heres the deal ...as i see it ...when you get both mufflers off the sound will probably not please you much.... the 2 into one is really set up the wrong way .....if the 2 cylinders that were together were the front 2 it would be perfect 180 degrees oppose from each other...hmmmm actually 360 degrees and be in perfect balance as the motor is .....this is why a cross over is needed in the exhaust from side to side to help balance out this mismatch the stock headers bring to the table ....not a huge thing but it is off the perfect flow pattern.......as for loud exhaust go for goldwings ....4 into 4 seems to be the best in sound and it also eliminates the flow mismatch as there no connection to account for .....back pressure was sort of dived into some .....let say a perfectly open pipe from header is use on each clylinder ....lets say it 1 1/2" pipe .... the longer that pipe is ...the more back pressure there is ...even through there nothing in pipe to back up flow .....the whole idea it has to travel down the pipe before it out in the open air is back pressure .....if you get this done to hat the motor operates the best it dont get any better .... you get open flow ...with the right amount of back pressure to really go through the rpm capability of motor .... it also sounds like full auto fire from big guns ....when i had hooch set up on four open pipes i had sheesh it would tach out quick ....but it ws way to loud for me to take long ...even though i like the sound i never went to adding the pipe it needed to be even better ....this sound at 10000 rpm is way to much and a sure to be stopped by cops deal ......

my advice stick with a quieter exhaust ......

Well I lost one of my mufflers so I had to take the other one off. My plan is to weld on some tips that I can put a stainless sleeve over. The stainless will polish up and look like chrome but not quite as shiny. I am going to make my stainless tips about 12" long and choke the bore down in them to approximately 1 1/4" and fasten them onto the carbon steel tips that I welded onto the headers. This should create some sufficient back pressure and quiet them down a little bit.

I took the other muffler off this morning so both headers are just straight open right now and its a little much....

Would you consider the Harley sportster mufflers? Easy swap and you could drill out a baffle plate or two to get the volume you are looking for?

I've heard one can get them cheap at some Harley dealerships. Then again probably cheaper on eBay.

I managed to find some down here on eBay for the right price for future use.

On the VJMC site there is a complete Jardine system that is near new for $300 Oz that would fit the Rats Nest nicely. Unfortunately I don't seem to have a spare $300 atm :(
