Nice..Not sure about the dowels but I would think there should be, check the cap sometime they get stuck on the other half.

I checked the cap and the block to see if they were pushed all the way in. I looked inside of the block...nothing. When I inspected the cap there's no evidence that anything was in there. But, I'll find out for sure before I put her back together...

Ok, my plan is to mic the cam and bearings myself with a mic (that I'm about to get from my best friend.. Harbor Freight..)

or, would ya'll suggest taking it to a machine shop?

OHHHH and the mail man just delivered my (complete) gasket set...now all I need is for my new stator and rectifier to get here.....oh and a crank....LOL

I would use plasti-gauge with that less rusty crank, though rust anywhere but the journals isn't a problem.

I've never used a plasti-guage, but I guess I'll be making an addition purchase and goggling how to use them.

One of the gallery manuals show how it's done. Specs are there too.
I'm on my phone right now so it's hard to look it up.

Cheap and easy just don't turn the crank with it in there(makes a mess) once you torque the journal down then remove the smashed plastic and compare on the package for your clearance.Pretty accurate if you don't have a bore gauge and micrometers.
PS..It wont measure elongation that what mic and bore gauge is best but it will give you the go for assembly.

I just checked out a video... I'm sold on plasti-gauge. I like it better that mic-ing cranks or cams.....thanks that info was invaluable

Is there suppose to be dowels in the center cap? If so, they are missing.

There are no dowels in the center cap.

Thanks

Napa stores and the traditional auto parts type stores (the real one's with guys that know anything) should have them.
If you find a local auto parts that does head machining work, they should have them.

Jersey, been out of town all day. The cleaner crank is from the '81. I would mic it plus plastigauge. Plastigauge only tells you clearances in the bearings, but not whether a journal is out of round. That '81 engine had worn out rod and main bearings so I would most definitely check to be sure it is not out of round.

FYI, here is what it sounded like running:

And pics of the bearings. Crank bearing:

If the journal is out of round you will have failed bearing shells. If you haven't stripped the crank out of an engine then you will need to mic the journals
