I sure would like to play with one of those ....

With 115,000 pounds of thrust, hold on tight! :smilie_happy:

No discussion of unuaual engines would be complete without at least mentioning the "Gunbus" build. 400+ cubic inch V twin. I don't have the link but it was on Kneeslider .

Not too unusual, but most people don't get a chance to hear a modern medium speed marine diesel in action. This is a GE Model 6L250 inline 6 cylinder turbocharged engine. The engine is running at 900 RPM and is about 2450 horsepower:

I asssume that's a reduction unit...what's the propeller RPM?
That is a reduction gear. It drops the shaft RPM down to 300 RPM maximum. This is a controllable pitch propeller system. The engine and reduction never stop turning the shaft for reverse. The propeller itself changes direction.

Apparently, it makes a purdy dang gud 11 cylinder hand warmer..... :smilie_happy:

Don't get to see (or hear) this much anymore, but this is the same engine that was in a tug I was on. Imagine trying to sleep with that turbocharger ringing in your ear!

Here is a pic of the tug:

wow, reading this thread jogged my memory back to when i was a lad. this engine was the talk of all us young petrol heads. and then it sank without a trace,. we were all totally convinced that oil companies/vehicle manufacturers, ( or other nameless evil doers ) had offered this fellow so much money for his ideas that he couldnt say no. he actually went on to be a HUGE property developer in Perth , this only confirmed our conspiracy theories.
this clip is a bit long, but toward the end you see the engine in action, on a lathe, showing the concept.
