    GL-1000 tach drive housing

Hey gang, When I pulled the fuel pump off of my 76 GL-1000, there was engine oil inside of the tachometer drive housing. Is this right? Someone told me that the housing should be dry inside with the spiral gears lubed with grease. But the Honda parts list shows only 3 oil seals for the...

    GL-1000 valve adjuster - Help!

Hey guys, I need the threaded valve adjuster and the locking nut for my '76 GL. (the part that screws into the rocker arm) The only place that I've found that has them is a site called "parts and more". These guys want FIFTEEN bucks to ship a four dollar part that will fit in an envelope. Does...

    Odd C5 glitch...and quick fix!

So far I have been VERY happy with my C5 system on my '76 Wing. Yesterday morning, the bike wouldn't start. It cranked and popped a bit, but no start. I had to go to work, so I left it and took the truck. This morning, just as an afterthought, I pulled the cover off of the C5 housing on the back...

    Michelin Commander II tires?

A lot of reading seems to show that the Michelin Commander II is the longest lasting tire out there. They have a 110/90 for the front of my 76 Wing. The rear of my bike uses a 120/90 17. Michelin doesn't make that in a rear tire, just a front. My reading seems to indicate that the only...

Emblems on side covers, how to remove?

Hey Guys, We need to (carefully) remove the emblems from the side covers of my buddy's 84 Aspencade. Are they glued on? Just pressed into the holes in the side cover? How do we get them off without damaging the emblems? Thanks guys.

    84 Aspencade electrical short?

Hey guys, A friend of mine just bought a very nice '84 Aspencade. It has one problem, it keeps blowing the fuse that feeds the tail lights, parking lights and dash backlights. We disconnected the tail lights under the seat and checked them separately. The tail lights are fine. We then pulled...

Air cut-off valve, pro or con

Guys, I found this bit of info on Saber Cycle. It sorta makes sense, except for the part about how I should be getting 50 to 58 mpg. I've never read of anyone getting 58 miles per gallon on a Wing. I'm getting 40 to 42 and from what I've read, I thought that was pretty good. Any opinions, pro...

    GL-1000 cylinder heads

Hey gang. Quick question. I believe my 76 GL needs a valve job on the left side. I have a 78 GL parts bike here. A: Will the cylinder heads from this engine go right onto my 76? B: Do I have to change both of them? Or can I do just one? C: What are the differences in the heads (and cams)...

    78/79 exhaust question

Hey Guys. Will the heat shields that cover the headers on a 79 fit a 78? I'm missing the longer heat shield, the one with the round hole in the middle, for my 78. I found one for a 79 on Ebay. It looks similar, but I can't tell from the pics.

Wanted: Heat shield, on 78 header

There are two heat shields that fit on the header pipes, just below the cylinder head on a 78, a larger one and a small one. I'm missing the larger shield on the left side exhaust header if anyone has one that they'd like to part with. Thanks guys.

    Busy or noisy engine?

Until recently, my '76 Wing was the only Goldwing I'd ever ridden. Recently a friend picked up a '80 1100. The engine in his bike seems much quieter than mine. With mine, it seems like I'm hearing every moving part in engine, valves tapping, parts whirring. His seems very quiet, not nearly as...

    GL-1000 Exhaust question

Will the original exhaust system from a '78/79 GL fit or work on a '76? I may have a chance to get a entire system from headers on back off of a '78 or 79 parts bike. Would be nice if it would fit my '76.

    Can you hear me now???

I ride a 76 GL with the last generation Windjammer fairing, the one with the parking lights/directionals built into the front. Like most old bikes, the Goldwing "had" a almost inaudible beep-beep horn. So I stopped at Harbor Freight and picked up a pair of these...

Questions for Dan, Joe (and others)

Guys, first I want to thank you for all the research and testing you've done to make it easier for those of us who don't have the knowledge or abilities that you do. Now that I have my '76 on the road (with C5 ignition!), I would really like to get rid of those four damned carbs. I've already...

    Harley Mufflers on a Wing...revisited

Hey gang. When I first got my 76 GL, like many of them, the original exhaust was long gone. Based on what I read on several forums, I bought a matched set of Harley FLH take-offs and installed them. Not as quiet as a Wing should be, but bearable....sort of. The more I rode the bike, the more...

    Dipstick blues

Guys, on my '76 GL-1000, is there an actual dipstick available for checking the oil? That damned little window is a pain in the ... and I have to lay down on the dirty floor to see it! Thanks guys.

    How to quiet mufflers?

Hey gang. Recently got my '76 on the road with a pair of seemingly new Harley takeoffs from a FLH. Despite being new and appearing to be unmolested, they have a heck of a bark. My ears are ringing. I've always liked QUIET bikes. Anyone have any tips on quieting these things down? I was...

    Head gaskets? Valve cover gaskets?

Hey gang, where's the best place to buy head gaskets and valve cover gaskets for my 76 gl? Thanks guys.

    Main fuse is kaputski !!

Guys, my '76 had a complete electrical failure. A little checking found this little plastic box with a screw-in fuse element near the battery. Of course the fuse element is fried. I guess my main question is, what are people replacing that unit with that has a commonly available fuse? And what...

    GL-1000 Compression question

My '76 GL with "supposedly" 68,000 miles is showing about 92 pounds of compression on cyls 1,2, and 4. But cyl 3 is reading 122. What should the compression read on this bike? I'm beginning to think that the odometer has turned over once and the engine has more like 168,000 miles.
