Time for the next general question...

Since I am getting rid of the old stuff and putting on the new, I may as well do the same thing when it comes to the spark plug boots, so what is a good boot to use with the C5 system?

It should V, but I am looking to replace the stock Honda boots with something new. I haven't looked to see what is out there yet (stuck at work and can't surf freely) so I figured I'd ask first.

Per Paul....

He insists the C5 needs at least one resistor in line.
The EMI suppression wire he includes satisfies this requirement.

Paul also recommends new ngk plug boots.

I completely over looked that top paragraph on page 2. :head bang: :head bang: :head bang:

I have never looked at them in the past, so is it one size fits all when it comes to NGK resistor spark plug caps?

NGK XD05FP is what I have on the '83. The NGK logo is raised, so if you want a good seal at the rubber boot, you can file, grind, or cut it smooth. I got mine from Amazon.

The saga continues and now I am coming into the area of my weakness. I can cut and soldier wires without any problem but I can't read a schematic and figure out which wire is a switched power lead or not. So this statement in the installation instructions is one that I need to make sure I get right:

" Red wire = goes to a switched power lead. You can use the original coil power wire. Be sure to test it with a “test light” to be sure it turns off with your ignition switch or the bike will not shut off!!"

Which wire in the attached picture is the switched power lead? I am thinking the yellow as that wire goes to both coils, but I know my limits.

According to the schematic, the black with white stripe is the switched + power to the coils. Test it with a volt meter or test light first. It should have power only when the ignition switch is in the normal running position, and the kill switch is in the run position. If either switch is off, the wire should be dead.

So what is the yellow wire? I could have sworn that wire went to both coils, but I guess I have had a few too many to see straight. And then, what is the black (or blue) wire for? Looks to me like they go to the spark unit so if that is the case, can those be removed?

Yes, black with white stripe is the + from kill switch.
I double checked how mine was hooked up as well as the wiring diagram.

The other 2 you leave unconnected to anything.
I unplugged the spark units because they would still be getting power and not needed.

That was my thinking since I already have that black tar substance running out of them and don't need them getting any hotter than necessary if they are not needed.

Okay, my next stumbling block...

The red wire from the C5 module goes to the center terminal of the coil and an additional wire comes off of that red wire to the + switched wire from the bikes harness. Do I have that correct?

Yes.
Red feeds switched + to the ignition and coils.
This is where the black from the kill switch connects.

I must have done something right because the little red light is on when the motor is at TDC and the ignition is turned on. I guess I can button everything up and put it all back together again.

It may be alive, but it is still a long way from a beating heart. Honda was sadistic for putting that ignition housing back there! Getting that cover back on has been the hard thing to do so far!!!!!!!
