The C5 module and the decoder wheel cannot make any noise.
The sleeve spacer did engage the center pin, right?

The audio isn't great but your noise to me sounds like a loose tappet.
The 'tap' got louder and more pronounced when you revved it. Hopefully that's not a valve tapping a piston.
Yes, check the cam timing again and adjust the valves.
It does sound out of sync also but I don't think that would cause a tap like that.
 
time to just move slow now...and check everything ...id strip the valve cover and timing covers ... and check belt timing and valve adjustment ... it was hard for me to get much out of video ..... once timing and valves are ok ...have plugs out check cpmpression or push by hand or gauge ... dont forget wide open throttle ... stock carbs sitting for awhile can go bad bigtime or there could be leaking air ... it is not smooth ... is the vac advance tube blocked off on carbs if not this would really screw that carb bigtime...check that first ....
 
I didn't block the vacuum tube off. I just connected it like original until I figure out a way to plug the tube at the carb. So when I get off from work I guess I am going to recheck the belts, valves, timing, etc, etc, etc...

I am glad its running. As Dan stated earlier, the C5 makes no noise but hopefully you'll find the source.

As for information about rotary switches, you need a 4 position/2 terminal style. I have used a few from eBay but will be testing a waterproof style in the future. The cheap ones are not water tight and I fear might not hold up to the abuses of a Wing rider in bad weather.

Brian, I would let the engine cool overnight and check the valves. (Changed the belts too?) I would check the cam pulleys one more time.

Could be an exhaust leak, but it sounds a little higher up.

Ding, ding, ding!!!! We have a winner! That extra :sensored: :sensored: :sensored: :sensored: :sensored: :sensored: index mark on the right pulley reached out and bit me!

I know better, but I did it anyway, now to redo the valves and synch the carbs and then see if I did anything serious to the motor. It doesn't sound like it, but I want to get everything back together before I turn it again.
 
brian and all turn by hand many times with plugs out many time ..more than once ... then set valves ... do it all by hand again many times ....before moving on the most important job on oldwings ..... i think your going to be okay maybe ... :beg:

I can't speak for Brian, but.....a funny thing my Dad used to say about me......always said I was "sharp" and then afterward I would hear him whisper to my Mom,..."Yeah, your son is about as sharp as a bowling ball!" :smilie_happy:
 
I looked and relooked, checked and rechecked and I turned it through about five turns so there was no binding - still I missed that I had it off by that one tooth. I runs right now without any knocking, tapping or ticking. Only time will tell when I get to the compression...

I always thought so, but maybe a little humble pie isn't so bad either. :oops:
 
I think you're OK. Even a slightly bent valve would instantly cause a major loss of compression at idle, and yours is running good on all 4 cylinders.

After you install timing belts, rotate the engine by hand, feeling for any binding. If it's free, rotate it several revolutions, then check all 3 timing marks very carefully! It's so easy to be off by one tooth.

I just made a trip to one of my favorite toy stores: Harbor Frieght, to get a compression tester.. Now I am worried... All four cylinders are reading between 90 and 95 PSI. So either I got a bad "Made in China" gauge or I need some valve work on all 4 cylinders. One problem that I have it that the motor sounds better today, now that the timing belt is correct, than it did before I started this saga.

Time to put the rear wheel on and see what I get!
 
Hmmm, my diagnosis, it needs three maybe four hours of aggressive, excessive acceleration on a four lane highway. In other words blow da soot out of it. :whip: :moped: :yes:
 
If only one side was off a tooth, and valves did get bent, only one side would read low. The fact that they're all so close, and it's running so well, makes me think that all is well. Try the gauge on another engine, or a compressor, like Dan said.

Great idea Dan! On the air compressor, the compression test gauge was 40 pounds low.

Gerry, Yes to all.

Carbs are synched and the motor is running smooth now so I think I dodged a bullet!!!!

Tomorrow I finish putting things together and paint the faux tank doors and then it will be time to say "screw it, lets ride!"

For sale! 33 year old ignition coils. They are know to crap out in a rain storm and cause the engine to run on only two or three cylinders. They are even known to cause spitting and sputtering when first starting up the engine. :smilie_happy:

I did find that I have a small hole in one of the mufflers, so that is my exhaust leak that you hear so I may be switching over to a set of Sportster mufflers sooner than I expected... I cannot wait to get on the open road with this thing and see what it does. :mrgreen:
