Heard of lots of people using the grease gun. I've always been able to get them out with the air compressor, but it can be....ah.....explosive.

Turned over 140,000 Km - a bit of a milestone in the north here.

Why's 140k so special there. Do things freeze up permanently after so long? :headscratch:
Maybe that's the equivalent of 100,000 miles?

also fought a valiant fight with the rear caliper (pistons refuse to come out) tomorrow the torch.

Don't torch on the caliper! I take old calipers to a working master cylinder and pump the rusty pistons out with brake fluid. Has worked every time for me.

what did I do over again. Used your idea to use the grease gun to extract the caliper cups. It worked but if I had used the torch I would of had fire love fire. Installed the rebuild kit ad I was going to use my little parts bucket I opened it and pound 2 jets from the carbs, pulled the carbs back off and repaired that problem. put the carbs back on and got it ready to fire when the tank gets out of its rust removal bath and reinstalled. For tomorrow the rear end put back on. Then on to the front end. I hope you guys had a better day.

Brake fluid/ATF/grease is a much safer method to extract stuck pistons, since the liquids aren't compressible and you don't get an explosive event when the parts finally move. Also, the grease gun method can generate up to 3000 psi and most stuck pistons will move way below that.

I had a cheap grease gun, so I removed the piston and spring, braised that end shut and now pump ATF through it to loosen pistons, fill shocks, and in general, apply high pressure lube to recalcitrant parts. Just have to remember to hold the gun vertical to keep air from entering the pump.

140,000 Kms is 87,000 miles. Since we went metric anything over 100,000 Kms (62,000 miles) is thought to be a high mileage vehicle and people look at this regarding resale value for cars/trucks and even motorcycles.

I have been noticing the same for the US bikes that are in miles, mileage is always a consideration when buying. Sonya's brother has an '05 GL1800 with 250,000 Kms (154,000 miles) on it. Asked about a trade in and the dealer mentioned $1,000.00. Engine probably has some 250,000 Kms of good operation if not more, and with good maintenance on the bike as a whole considerably more.

140,000 Kms is not special, but it does raise an eyebrow or two when mentioned, especially if you tour with your bike and use it daily. Just an observation.

Cheers

Geez... $1000 for trade-in value?

You're in Victoria, BC... Lessee... I could fly out there, and drive it all the way home... hmm...

A one-way airline ticket would set me back about $500 or so... If I rode at a moderate pace, it's a four-day... I could do it on a weekend and take two days off work... hotels ... budget another $500, and 60 gallons of gas... another $150...

I could hand you $2500 and more than double your trade in... and with flying out, and driving it home, still be in a great deal... :hi:

It's running yes sir the bitch is back. now for all the rest of the work by end of winter will be a new used bike. If she doesn't kill me. I think she's a reincarnation of someone I didn't like very much because I married her.

I hear you, but dealers can be brutal either side of the border. 250,000 Km is not a lot of mileage per say in my book. What do these people expect, park it and not ride it, same with a car? The bikes in Ottawa, Ontario by the way - also easier to get to, and has a side car attached. He's going to keep it, I mentioned he should as well.

Cheers

Took the shelter off and sprayed carb cleaner down the air ways to clean the throttle plates. Jacked up the RPM with the throttle screw. Started out at 2000 RPM and climbed to 2500 RPM. Will do this again in a couple of months.

Cheers

got the fender back on ,also the wheel, drive shaft, rear master ,cleaned parts I hope not needing to see again for awhile. I still need to refill drive unit. Also need to put all the boxes and trunk and remember where all the wires go like to wrap the rear tomorrow then on to the front end. replace all brakes new seals in tubes bleed rear and front calipers replace all fluids and of course the timing belts.

reply to Slab ghost Need to get it done so it can sit all winter out in my unheated garage. So I don't have to. I have heat in garage but no insulation. I am getting to old to be in the cold for any extended time. But come spring I will be real close to riding and not wrenching. Have a good time on the last days of decent wheather the winter will be long and cold.

Hello there all, For the last couple of weeks my oldwing had been giving me trouble with the starter, it was click!! click!! click!! then wromm!!! :smilie_happy: And it got worse to the point that I had to press the start button a dozen times. I ordered new oem brushes from fleabay :smilie_happy:
Last night I removed the started cleaned it and put some grease to the gears and new brushes in. Works like new!
When I bought my wing the gentleman that sold it to me had a log with all maintenance/repairs done to it and the last time they repaired the starter was like 20000mi ago plus the 8 years in sleep so I guess it was its time!

:salute: amigos!
