I'll never complain about my poor old '81 diesel 1100 again. :hihihi:

Dan, is that really what a loose stator bolt sounds like?

Yep. Check that stator bolt Thompson. Backfiring will make it loosen up.

Well Thompson, have you checked your stator bolt yet? Boy that would be great if that is what it is. We need to get all of the videos we have posted throughout the threads in one thread as a stickie to label all of the different tests and results we have come up with to date. Would make for a nice data center to check and listen.

edit: Dan you have got to stop doing that! (posting the same things at the same time!) :smilie_happy:

Honestly, I wouldn't know where to start to check it.

Dan, I can't recall any backfiring, but who knows. If someone will point me in the right direction, I'll check it and see what happens.

On the left side back of the engine (just in front of the battery) there is a cover that needs to be removed and inside is the bolt that holds the stator in and it also is used to dry crank the engine after you do repairs or need to line up the timing belts. Unscrew the cover and see if the bolt is there.

thomson your telling me that the sator blolt is gone ......this is good news maybe.....icant see how its gone unless the cap is gone to..... im not sur how hard that will be to replace but its not like replacing the whole motor ...... :hihihi:

I don't know that the stator bolt is gone, just didn't know where to find it to check it. That's on my list for this weekend or the first of next week, depending on what the wife wants done when I get off work Saturday morning.

That would be sweet if it was just the stator bolt loose....

I think we are all on pins and needles waiting to hear about this. We are all pulling for you.

I sure hope that is all that it is! If it is not and there is a more serious problem, my '81 engine is still available, but my 19 year old daughter is back from college and is ready to open it up.

Another thing about that stator bolt, I found on mine the racket quieted down at rpm's above 3000. Not sure why that is.
There was a definite vibration felt in the seat and bars.

I've listened to that video many times without looking at it and I'd swear it's the stator bolt.
The noise sounds more like a dry scratching/scraping noise, not internal which would be deeper and muffled.
Other sources for a noise like that could be a timing belt cover come loose and scraping the timing belts or pulley's, or possibly something came apart in the clutch/rear cover area.

Whatever it is I hope it's something simple!

Unfortunately, Andy, you're going to have to wait til at least Saturday.

Thanks for the offer on the engine, but I think I've found a good one from a 76 1000 in St. Louis for $125. As far as letting your daughter tear into the 81, go for it. I'm interested in finding out what 's going on with that too.

I found out 2 things while checking the stator bolt. 1 was that aluminum shears really easy, I know the because I sheared the stator bolt cover off the threads. 2 was that it wasn't the stator bolt. After making sure that it was tight, I started the bike and, although the knock didn't seem as loud, it was still there. I also noticed that while the bike was running, it didn't want to take fuel and the tach wasn't working, which leads me to believe thta I broke at least one belt. I'll have to do a complete tear down for sure now.

On a brighter note, I may be getting a replacement 1100 engine for nothing more than a solid days work and an 8 hour round trip. Still talking to the boss on that one though.

Since the tach isn't working I'd take a look at the timing belts. I bet one broke.
The noise could be a dropped or broken valve and other things.

What I'm saying is I'd investigate before swapping the engine.
My experience has been your better off with an engine you know has run and know the condition instead of taking chance on someone elses used and possibly abused motor that could end up needing more work than what you have.
