If I am lucky lol

I have not been on in a long time. I have had problems with my Volvo and RC51 that have been taking up my spare time an resources. Like this recent development on the Volvo...

The only real thing I have done recently is get the frame powdercoated kind of a navy blue...

The frame looks great. :good:
I know it is tempting to push the boundaries but everyone I know that have kept their WRXs stock report very little problems. As soon as the tire, turbo, inter cooler, etc upgrades occur they become unreliable and very expensive :(
I hope that you get the Volvo and the RC51 sorted soon and can get back on to the GW again

Once again it has been forever since I have been on this forum. I finally started work on the wing again. I just put the timing belts back on and the drivetrain. Careful not to nick my shiny frame. I am polishing and painting every part and fastener and I reinstall them. Most major components have to be rebuilt as well. I left the easy to get to parts to polish last. I plan on doing a wire tuck with a modern fusebox.

The burnt valve was due to buildup and a bad lifter. Got a valve job and all new lifters it has been running good since then with little leak issues that where my own fault.

I was really surprised to see the factory cross hatching on the cylinders at 140k miles. Volvos have bulletproof bottom ends! I want to get it properly dyno tuned one day.

But the weather is getting nice out so I want to ride!

I think I made the wing about 100 lbs lighter by taking off the fairings and heavy tank/seat, chopping the frame etc.

Does anyone have suggestions for a sticky good cornering tire that fits on my wing?
So far I have found...
Dunlop D404
Shinko 712

Keep in mind I have only ridden sportbikes and dirtbikes, this is my first cruiser.

Thanks for any input. I'm off to the garage!

I would still stick with the Shinko A230s as they wear better than the 712s and are more suited to a heavier bike. I have been grinding off the foot peg pins and the sides of the center stand with them and have found them to always hang on.

Also good in the wet and mud as just after the hail it was up my dreaded driveway which was now running like a river. Don't pay too much attention to the dash cam speed as it is always unreliable in these conditions. Going a lot faster than 48kph as can be estimated by the revs and gear changes :hihihi:

Yeah I have always been a wussy about wet ground. I would not go that fast. That looks good, but I don't really ride much in the rain. I am looking for good dry weather grip mainly, I want to drag race it a bit too. I noticed these old fashioned bias ply tires are pretty cheap compared to sport bike tires, that's good!

I cannot speak more highly of these tires that were recommended to me by Backlander ( Mike) for my US adventure in Aug 2013 on the Rats Nest. I rode plenty of high speed twisties through the Zion Ut, San Juan Skyway Co, Pig Tails Sd and the Western side of the Black Hills down to Newcastle Wy. I wore the rear out in 6000 miles but we did that trip from LA to Sturgis and back in 6 1/2 days so as you can imagine we were moving and I forgot to mention that we also rode Yosemite and the PCH. My brothers 888 Metzler wore out in 9000 miles on the back of his 2012 Roadking mainly from riding 6000 miles with me including a couple of day rides to Ortega Cannon and Julian. As you know I ride CBRs as well so the Rats Nest gets ridden pretty hard. I did initially put a Metzler LaserTech on the rear when I first got the Rats Nest on the road back here in Oz which only lasted less than 3000 miles which is a similar rated tire to the 712s.
Here is a link to some of the riding that wore out the Metzler

Nice riding. Good info, I am not concerned with replacing tires after 3000 miles, I used to use Dunlop Q3's on my RC51, the way I rode it I don't think they even lasted 3000 miles. My first priority is maximum traction, tire life is my last priority. Do you ever air down the bias plys? If so how do they react? Would you say that the 712's have a softer sidewall or flex more than the A230's? Softer compound? I wish radials where interchangeable with bias plys.

There are tons of logging trails and winding mountain roads where I live, so I must have good traction and cornering. Plus I always ride with sportbikers and supermotos, so I will be outmatched, I just want to be able to confidently scrape footpegs. I am actually thinking about making a custom cage with frame sliders to protect the valve covers, well maybe later, after it's running lol.

i cant offer much here but do think that oldwing can handle well if for real brought up to par ...40 yr old bike is just that ...it dont have to be made like sport bikes are to compete ..but the limited tires and weak springs and such are the biggest reason ....im in same boat ...i have very fast bike not up to par ... i just cant afford to spend my way out right now ..to make bike better ... till then i will lag behind and not push

Marty I beleive you will be hard pressed to find a better tire to abuse on a GW than the 230s especially when you consider the price. Might not be the highest milage tires but I like the idea of having fresh tires as much as possible. Dash cam after a ride with all sports bikes, the slowest being a Buell 1125 with a more inexperienced rider.
More of the conditions that my tires get
You can always search the Dreaded Driveway here for more ideas on what my tires experience.

That looks like fun in the mud! lol

I don't think I will ever take mine off of the pavement.

I did a little more research on tires, it does appear that the 230's have a stiffer sidewall and load rating than the 712's and Dunlop 404's. To be honest, the 712's look like they have a more aggressive tread pattern and I like the way they look better. I am not sure what I want, but I have it narrowed down to 3, and I have a bunch of time to decide. I have always liked Dunlop's, I am glad they make tires that fit this bike.

These pics are up in another thread already, but am a interwebs attention whore and I know you guys like pics. Really I just want a online archive on here.

I also wanted to mention that my RC51 has been sold for months now so I can devote more time to the wing. I will see how I like riding it before I decide to keep it or not. How much doe you think a restored wing like mine would be worth? I bought this one for $400.
