Sorry bro, that ain't easy.

Great to re read your trike build Sledge. And again sorry about the loss of your chief mechanic/ machinist. I know that someone has changed the rake by cutting and re welding the steering head with an increased rake (Backlander?). Keep us posted in your trike build of any further progress :good:

Really sucks to lose your best friend. I like to believe they stay with us in spirit. He did great in helping you get that trike built. Keep it in memory of him. :good:

I painted my '82 with Rustoleum...very nice stuff. For clear I used Minwax Polyurathane because I read on the Internet that it was somewhat resistant to gasoline. Have never tested it.

Both are from Home Depot but I found the Minwax in the wood finishing section.

I have, but not intentionally. Gas hasn't eaten through it yet.

All parts are painted and waiting for me to rebuild front brake master cylinder. Really tired of looking at this bike in such a state.

Getting there. Only things left are the badges and front fender. Took it around the block 3 times. Man I want this done so I can ride it. Ride it like "take off for parts unknown".

Excellent colour and it looks real good from down here :good:
May you be :moped: for parts unknown soon

Update: Rustoleum clear coat does not hold up to gas. Instantly left mark on side of faux tank. I managed to compound most of it out. Now I had to rethink this paint job. I really liked the blue metallic from Rustoleum and wanted to keep it. Also didn't want to throw away all the time spent putting it on. So started researching what I could do using spray cans since I don't have a spray gun set-up. Here's what I settled on...... https://www.eastwood.com/eastwood-s-2k-a ... clear.html

It's not cheap but it gives an awesome thick chemical resistant very high gloss finish. Smooth as glass. So far I've done my tank cover and a saddle bag lid. I will do all the parts painted blue. Figure it will take 4 more cans to do it all and though that's not cheap, it's still less than I'd pay to have a pro shop do it. And I'll get similar results. I did have to buy a respirator. You can't breathe this crap. It's really bad for the lungs.

The prep for this was simply wet sanding (water with Dawn dish detergent) with 1200 grit to clean and rough up the surface. Rinse thoroughly, dry and hit it with the 2k clear.

Very little orange peel. Great smooth surface as you can see in the pics.
