Otay boys and gurls....it's carbatater day! :builder:
Got the rack on the bench, and all the bowls off, to start the cleaning on them. Not too much doo-doo in any of the bowls....just a little sediment from the high quality fuels around here. :whistling:
Checked the air cut-off diaphragms(the ones I could get to), and they look fairly new, as does the accelerator pump. Good news for me, since I've seen some of the ones youse guys have posted that were just nasty, and un-usable.
I found that there was some slop in the linkage between the left side carbs and the right side. I could move the throttle linkage, and the left side throttles would move instantly, but the right side carbs would not, until the slop in the linkage bushing was taken up. I'm certainly no eggspurt on these carbs, but I'm purdy sure they should all move at the same time. Since the rubber bushings on the linkage seem to be non-replaceable, I decided to find some way to get rid of the slop.
My solution was to use some heat shrink tubing on the pins that the linkage fastens on to. This effectively makes the pin diameters larger, and produces a fairly snug fit for the bushings. Worked like a charm. Now both carb banks move the throttle blades as soon as the throttle linkage is moved.
I checked the float levels too...not real happy with this one. #1 carb level is at 18mm, while the other three are all around 16mm. This is measuring with a dial caliper. Spec according to factory service manual is 15.5mm. I have read here from several of ya'll that you set yours differently, so I'm asking, what should I set these to? The bike ran otay before, but I'm sure it could/would be better if everything is adjusted properly.
I'm off to get some brake cleaner to clean the carbs up some...I don't think I'm gunna tear into them any deeper, since they are clean, and the rubber stuff(so far) is in good shape. I do have new gasket/o-ring seals for the bowls. Whomever did these before used some sillycone on the bowl seals, for some reason. Don't see why that would be necessary. Guess just had to have some "Bubba" in there somewhere. :hihihi:
I got a new thermostat from NAPA(#THM 101), and the new seals for the valve cover bolts came in a couple of days ago(of course...now I've lost one of the friggin bolts... ). Once I get the carbs buttoned back up, I'll put the timing belts on, and the engine will be ready to slide back into it's rightful home on the bike. Before I do that, I've still got tires to mount, steering head bearings to replace, and some plastic welding to do on the fairing. And.....still ain't located those two sparkle plugs... oh2:
Getting closer!!! :Egyptian:
