Otay boys and gurls....it's carbatater day! :builder:
Got the rack on the bench, and all the bowls off, to start the cleaning on them. Not too much doo-doo in any of the bowls....just a little sediment from the high quality fuels around here. :whistling:

Checked the air cut-off diaphragms(the ones I could get to), and they look fairly new, as does the accelerator pump. Good news for me, since I've seen some of the ones youse guys have posted that were just nasty, and un-usable.

I found that there was some slop in the linkage between the left side carbs and the right side. I could move the throttle linkage, and the left side throttles would move instantly, but the right side carbs would not, until the slop in the linkage bushing was taken up. I'm certainly no eggspurt on these carbs, but I'm purdy sure they should all move at the same time. Since the rubber bushings on the linkage seem to be non-replaceable, I decided to find some way to get rid of the slop.

My solution was to use some heat shrink tubing on the pins that the linkage fastens on to. This effectively makes the pin diameters larger, and produces a fairly snug fit for the bushings. Worked like a charm. Now both carb banks move the throttle blades as soon as the throttle linkage is moved.

I checked the float levels too...not real happy with this one. #1 carb level is at 18mm, while the other three are all around 16mm. This is measuring with a dial caliper. Spec according to factory service manual is 15.5mm. I have read here from several of ya'll that you set yours differently, so I'm asking, what should I set these to? The bike ran otay before, but I'm sure it could/would be better if everything is adjusted properly.

I'm off to get some brake cleaner to clean the carbs up some...I don't think I'm gunna tear into them any deeper, since they are clean, and the rubber stuff(so far) is in good shape. I do have new gasket/o-ring seals for the bowls. Whomever did these before used some sillycone on the bowl seals, for some reason. Don't see why that would be necessary. Guess just had to have some "Bubba" in there somewhere. :hihihi:

I got a new thermostat from NAPA(#THM 101), and the new seals for the valve cover bolts came in a couple of days ago(of course...now I've lost one of the friggin bolts... ). Once I get the carbs buttoned back up, I'll put the timing belts on, and the engine will be ready to slide back into it's rightful home on the bike. Before I do that, I've still got tires to mount, steering head bearings to replace, and some plastic welding to do on the fairing. And.....still ain't located those two sparkle plugs... :Doh2:

Getting closer!!! :Egyptian:

Set all the floats to the manual setting or just a touch more. 18mm is a bit much and probably caused that cylinder to run a bit rich. Bolts are probably in the same coffee can as the spark plugs. Under all the shop towels.

PANIC TIME!!!!

I have a kweschun--need really fast answer, if anyone knows. The fuel from the right side carbs is transferred to the left side carbs thru a channel in the air chamber. Is there a screen or filter in this channel? When blowing air thru the fuel inlets on the right side carbs(while blocking the needle seats), there seems to be a restriction from the right side to the left. There IS air blowing out of the left side needle seats, but it seems to be restricted somewhat....or at least I think so. Seems the air should blow thru freely, but perhaps the transfer channel is just so small it creates a restriction when blowing air, but will allow fuel under NORMAL pressure to travel freely?

I don't wanna hafta disassemble the air chamber halves to check iffin I don't have to. I'd like to get the carbs finished today. Anyone know for sure if this is normal, or should I bust it down farther to check?

There is some doo-doo on the needle valve screens on all four carbs. Not a lot, but some. Just crap from the fuel, same as what I showed in the bowls. Just wondering if some of that stuff got caught in the transfer passage.

there's a plastic tube in there to reduce flow from side to side ...so it is restricted some ...

:thanks: :thanks: :thanks: Thanks Joe! I feel a little better now. :heat: :thanks:

kwitcherpanikin! It was running fine for years on those same carbs. Finish your cleaning and reassemble them.

Yes, Mother....yeeesh :cheeky: :cheeky: :cheeky:
:hihihi:

Here's a crappy shot of the fuel inlet filter for the #3 carb. Pics suck, but there IS some crap on the screen.

I got the floats all set to spec, had the bowls on #1 & 3 carbs. In the process of setting the #2 & 4 floats, I noticed the floats would not drop all the way down, as they should. Found out the dang little clips that hold the needle valve to the float arm have to be installed in one particular position. Once I figured that out, I had to take the friggin bowls off of the other two carbs and correct those, then re-check all the float levels. :Doh2: At least I learned something(two things, actually) today!

Got the carbs all cleaned, and assembled back together. Took a few minutes to polish two of the vacuum chamber tops, just for grins, and to see how they would look. Literally two minutes each got me this...

Grabbed the #1 intake runner, polished it for just a couple of quick minutes, and it came out like this...

Just stuck the rack on top of the engine for a shot....

At this point, I realized....you can't even SEE the friggin vacuum chamber tops with the sparkle plug covers I have... :Doh2: No matter...I'm still gunna finish polishing all 4 of them. They just look so nasty with the clear coat peeling and stuff. After all of this fancy schmacy polishing I'm doing, ya'll know the FIRST time I ride this turd after getting it back together, it's gunna RAIN....   :hihihi:

I did get my tools and stuff moved to the new shop Friday. It's gunna be nice not havin to get up at 5am every morning, and not gettin back home until 8pm. I'll have time in the evenings now to piddle with the bike, instead of having to wait until the weekend. :yahoo:

Sweet! I'm happy for you that you'll have more time and a job! I got lots of time and no income. Sure hope to win the lottery. It's only 1.3 million now though.

Looking good Joel!!

When I reached that point with my carbs, I decided to check for leaks and put a filled lawnmower gas tank 2 feet above the carbs to check for leaks. I then turned the carbs left/right 45 degrees and forward/back the same 45 degrees simulating leaning into turns and that was when I found mine were not sealing correctly.

:good:
Not sure if I can get my tractor that high above my carbs, but I do plan on testing them before final assembly somehow. :hihihi:

btw...I did find the missing vc bolt...it was in my car...in a ziplock bag, along with some other seals and such I had taken to the shop to match up... :Doh2:
Still haven't stumbled across the two sparkle plugs. I think I stuck them in a saddlebag when I first took them out. Guess I need to go out back and check....

Update for this weekend....
Got the timing belts on and cams timed.
Valves adjusted.

Finished polishing the carb vacuum chambers/tops, and all 4 intake runners.

Engine is complete, and ready to go back in.

Next task on the schedule is doing the steering head bearings. :builder:
