Sweet!!! You're gonna be so proud when you're done, you'll have to change its name! Way too purdy to be a turd!
He can just change it to "the Polished Turd" [emoji16]

Ya....it kinda sux, but....whaddya gunna do? :builder:

I have a new question/problem I keep forgetting to ask for help on. My vacuum advance is leaking. It does operate, but it will not "hold" a vacuum unless there is continuous vacuum applied to it. Are those things available anywhere, or would it be wise to open it up and try to fix it? I remember beaver doing his, and using an automotive advance diaphragm, but not sure if that's the way to go or not...
Any ideas/suggestions??

The VA on my '82 also leaks. :head bang: If I pump it up with a hand pump it leaks back down in 5 or 6 seconds. But on the bike it works, to advance the ignition, because I DO have a continuous vacuum as long as the engine is running. :good: I have observed it, with a timing light, through the timing hole and on a timing wheel on my crank.

But, I have a single carb...so that might give a stronger vac than OE rack.

Got the valve covers and belt covers polished. Wound up going to Harbor Freight and getting some buffing wheels for my grinder....the buffing rolls for the drill were just taking too dang long. Spent $24 on buffing wheels and polishing compound, and knocked it all out in aboot an hour. Tried to use my smaller grinder(6"), but it would stall out fairly easily, so I had to put the wheels on the big boy(3/4hp) 8". Got it all done, anyway. Now all that is left to polish is the intake horns. Those should be easy enough.

So today, I got the heads torqued down, starting at 20ft/lbs, then 30, then a final at 42 ft/lbs.
Got the coolant crossover tubes/thermostat housing on. Fan switch and coolant temp sender installed.
Gasket cut and installed for the pulse generator cover.
And of course, all the shiny stuff...
Comparison of polished/not polished.

Both belt covers done.

Right side vc.

Left side vc.

I'll wear gloves next time.....

I've heard of putting blood, sweat and tears in a project... but part of a finger!?

~O~

Hey....whatever it takes, O-man...whatever it takes..... :good:
:smilie_happy:

Now my latest problem. I replaced the valve cover bolt seals when I did the heads last time(3 years ago). I haven't had any trouble removing the bolts from the valve covers at all until yesterday, when I went to polish them. The dang seals would NOT pop out of the covers, no matter how I tried. I wound up using a small pocket screwdriver to push them thru, but ripped at least two of them...they're useless now. :head bang: The part number does not cross over to any other vehicle like some of the stuff does, but these seals ARE still used today on new Honda bikes(CMX250X). I haven't called the dealer down the road yet to see if they have them in stock....I hope they do. I really don't want to order more stuff, and wait on it to get here....arrrgh!
#4 in the illustration (90541-371-000) These are also used on the timing belt covers.

That'll teach me to install new vc gaskets, and bolt the covers down before I'm finished with all the other crap I gotta do.... :Doh2: :head bang:

I bit the bullet and got these seals...excellent price for the full set of 8, compared to anywhere from $3 to $9 each other places...

Thanx for all the compliments. I like how it's turning out, but...in the end, this engine is still gunna be installed in the Turd, and the chances of me keeping it this clean for very long are slim and none. :smilie_happy:
Gotta move my tools and stuff this weekend, so not likely to get much done on the bike. I'll prolly spend a little time making a feeble attempt to clean up the garage a little, so maybe I can find the 2 friggin sparkle plugs I now cannot seem to locate... :Awe:
