I didn't see the screen on the pickup. It needs to go in BEFORE the engine is in-frame. Semi-impossible to get in/out after. The cover has some of the few bolts that really should be changed to Allen as you can at least get a ball driver on the once in frame. Also check the neutral switch - easy to get to and replace/fix now - much harder behind the frame rail.

Ebay for the bolts, but if the rubber on them ends up shot I've had good luck with Partzilla and Parts-n-more.

okay, so I picked up the proper bolts for my timing belt cover. One of them is longer than the other 3 although it seems a little too long. Anyway, when installing the longer one, it will not bolt in straight. Seems as if the hole is both crooked and stripped. Has anyone helicoiled on of these bolt holes? Is there lots of material in there in the event I drilled a little deeper than the original hole? Thought I would ask you experts about this. Maybe there's a better method than helicoil? Thanks in advance.

hmmmmmm...need pics of this ... i dont see the line up problem... try just scewing the bolts in holes without cover ...it seems to me if there a problem here with line up ...you are dealing with a 1200 motor not 1100 ...is all i can think of ....needs pics of this

Possible wrong covers.
I think all 1000 and 1100 covers will interchange but not 1200 even though some look like they'll almost fit.
Like Joe said is best, check threads with cover off.

If it has a cover for the oil pickup screen, and the cam sprockets are original, it's a 1000 or 1100. Are the timing belt covers ridged or flat? 1200 covers have a smooth, flat front surface.

If one of the outer cover bolts won't go in straight, loosen the 2 small (10mm) bolts behind the cam sprocket, and try screwing one in. Sometimes the small back covers get mis-aligned. With the long bolt in place, tighten the 2 small bolts.

Need to get the engine numbers off the case to make sure what your working with. Post them and we can tell you what year and size the engine is, you could be working on a transplant. Like stated above the 1200 has smooth covers, it also uses 3-6x45 bolts and 1-6x58 bolt with the long bolt going in the outside left cover as your sitting on the bike.

Notice in #2 pic how the far right bolt does not want to thread straight in. Looking in the hole, things don't quite line up and the threads are stripped. It's a GL 1000 motor...I think...but a few pics always help. Give me thoughts on this small challenge.

Hmm that bolt on mine sheared of in the head... I drilled out retapped for 5/16 bolt.. have you tried to put it in first and then get it started before doing the others? .. I would try that first.. make sure all have started in the holes.. then snug down..

Numbers match, definitely a 79 GL1000 engine. I have no idea if the bolts are all the same length on the 1000's or not. I would probably fill the hole with liguid metal, JB weld or something like that and retap it straight with proper tap to match the 1000 bolts. The only pressure on them is holding the cover on, matter of fact, I have only one bolt on one of my covers because you can't put the inside bolt in with the external pulley on the front, it's never moved or gotten loose.

A buddy of mine came over with a helicoil kit and we helicoiled the hole as it was thrashed. it will not line up with the cover behind the timing belt pulley though. A shown in the pic, it is off by the thickness of the rubber gasket I'm pointing to with that appendage of mine. I'd sure like to remove it and 1184 the joint, although I'm sure it's there for a reason. Any more tips from you experts?

on the gl1000 3 of the bolts are the same length 1 is about a half inch longer the longer bolt is the left side cover inside bolt if my memory is correct.... now honestly I cheated I sealed both the inside holes with silicone and did not put those 2 in... without those two you can remove the covers and replace the belts without removing the radiator and it seems to seal well without those two.... when I purchased the bike 15 years ago this was how it was when I replaced with new chrome covers I decided I liked the idea... there was no evidence of any moisture getting inside mine

Thanks for the input as usual folks...I'm really thinking that oblonging the hole in the back cover is the way I'll go as mentioned above. Is ebay the best source for parts? I'm in need of the small cover that covers the clutch adjuster. I think it has some rubber grommets in the bolt holes.

I wiggled the engine in last night and the drive shaft onto the spline. I have a circlip I know goes somewhere on the spline that goes into the driveshaft. Any pics that show exactly where it goes? I just cant figure out the purpose the the circlip but I know it goes on there somewhere. do you put it on before or after the driveshaft knuckle is slipped onto the spline? (I'm hoping for after, lol).

Rotate the shaft until you can look down through the rear half of the U-joint at the splined shaft. There is a groove in the shaft that it goes on. Lots of fun to get on and off. It uses an external snap ring, of course. PO of mine had forced an internal snap ring on it. I had a photo. I'll see if I can find it.
