i got it where it clears now. and as far as the thin material i bought the 800 pound rated bars. thicker gauge than the standards. i also keep an old block of oak i put under the sheet stuff on the drill press. on my inline 4 customs i usually make ss or brushed aluminum for side covers and accents. keeping that hard wood under the target eliminates warping. drill press is a must have in my shop
 
After I cut the length of my runners I checked them by installing them into the plenum and laying one side at a time down close to where they bolt on to the head and took a sharpie and drew what I thought needed to be removed from the flange of the runner. Be careful for you can take away but it's just a little bit hard to replace it once it's gone! LOL! I did this method several times taking a little here and test fit then a little there and test fit till I got it right. I think Joe went a slightly different route and removed some material from his plug boots and got his to work. Several different ways to make it fit.
And you shouldn't have to worry about the flange being weak. This stuff is really stiff and holds its shape and flatness well under pressure.
 
The choke is totally removed from mine. I took the blue screw holding the choke on the outside of the carb and with some jb weld screwed it into the vacuum hole that feeds the choke along with the small o ring used there. Perfect fit. The choke blades and all related linkages are all gone now also so I have a straight open shot thru to the venturis. I have read on here that with the proper jetting and a little finessing at first start up the choke is not needed and it gets very hot also. Altho the heat maybe good for the carb I guess for icing I elected to do away with all mine with the way my plenum sits on the water pipes. The engine heat makes the ss toasty after just a little warm up and the water pipes keep the plenum warm also. I also didn't want any more volts/amps draw on my charging system with the electric choke.
Do what you think is best for you and your weather conditions and riding habits as everyone's area is different. I live near the Smoky Mtns. and in the summer here its gets high humidity and hot. I have been riding since the ripe old age of twelve and now 55 with a few syears break in the middle for the kids to grow up.
I just feel for me in my area I can live with a little cold naturedness on first start.
Not sure about the altitude and weather conditions in ND.
 
agreed..... the closer you jettin in the good gas charge zone icing is less a deal to contend with .. and all jetting is environment conditions ...im gambeling on no heat till it proves i need it or not ....not just putting it there cause i know it needs it when i dont know that yet
 
Yea I was thinking especially since I am running a 1000, jetting may be required. I would not mind keeping the choke, but it would have to be manual, I do not like the way the EMPI choke pulled on the charging system, it is noticeable on the meter.
 
And my logic on doing the heating on the plenum right now is, I have the radiator off, the lines are non existent, and the plenum is easy to access. Why not just get it done now since I know a guy that can attach the tubing for cheap. Actually, he will do it for the cost of a tuner up on his XL100 put put bike he rides back and forth to his shop.
 
I cant stand revisit things...lol...I am also looking at treating it like a heater, and having the shut off valve in the line to close it down when it approached 100 degrees like it can from time to time.
 
Been busy, I have tyhe manifold built and the carb is mounted, filter is complete, and I have it sitting with the initial bolts holding the runners in place to allow the spring loaded rubber runner adapters to relax. I have already cut my intake gaskets that will be replacing the o-rings. ALl I have to do is take one runner at a time off, and drill out the holes. My hicg carbon bit is ready to go, I did some initial drilling and I do not anticipate issues. I have to trim out the spark plug holes. I have them all marked and ready to go, but I used the last of my cut off wheels for my large dreml type tool. I have to go pick up a pack in the morning. I will have it all completed tomorrow. I had to spend my cash on an issue with my kids, one is leaving state, the other had an accident (minor) and is fine but ERs cost money.

But here is the bike so far.

Timing belts and cooling are next. Been dealing with a customer that wants to do his forks,,,himself, dont get me wrong I love to help people, but guys has been texting for two days on advice for his starter and on the forks. Told him if the shop is empty than I am in goldwing mode, so he has to do some loking around, the answers are out there, he started after I gave him the bid for the fork job.
 
It's not really a do it yourself job if you are basically doing it for him.:head bang:
The main reason you pay someone else is so you don't have to pay for your education in their field. :yes:
 
Just thought it was odd, oh well, too busy...

have to work on the linkage too.

its getting there slowly but surely

can someone provide me with info on setting up the throttle cable or any input on this is greatly appreciated.
